Biscuits Sweep Pair from Suns, 1-0 and 4-3
June 2, 2016 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Montgomery Biscuits made a single unearned run stand for a 1-0, seven-inning victory in Game 1, before rallying from a 3-0 deficit against the Jacksonville Suns for a 4-3, nine-inning win in Game 2 to sweep a doubleheader in front of 3,810 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville Thursday night.
In Game 1, Suns right-hander Austin Brice (3-4) pitched a season-long 6 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two walks while striking out seven batters. But the Biscuits (26-27) managed a run in the fourth inning, as right fielder Jake Bauers singled, advanced to third base on an errant pickoff throw by Suns catcher Francisco Arcia, and scored on Brice's wild pitch. It was enough for Biscuits right-hander Hunter Wood (1-0) in his five-inning Southern League debut, which left-hander Kyle Bird finished with two scoreless innings for his first save, snapping Montgomery's seven-game losing streak.
In Game 2, Jacksonville (25-28) took a second-inning lead against Biscuits right-hander Jake Faria. Third baseman Brian Anderson and shortstop Peter Mooney hit consecutive singles, before first baseman Chris Curley homered for a second time in three games with a drive to the right-field bleachers. Faria allowed only two more hits and no runs in his seven innings.
Montgomery began to come back against Jacksonville University alumnus and Suns left-hander Matt Tomshaw. In the fourth inning, second baseman Kean Wong doubled to left field, went to third base on a passed ball and scored on first baseman Casey Gillaspie's sacrifice fly. Jacksonville native and Biscuits center fielder Patrick Leonard homered to make it 3-2 to open the fifth inning, the last for Tomshaw after allowing one earned run with four strikeouts in his 2016 Suns debut.
The Biscuits tied the game, 3-3, against right-hander Tyler Higgins in the sixth inning. Left fielder Pat Blair hit a leadoff single, went to second base on a sacrifice and scored when Bauers hit an RBI single. The tie remained until the ninth inning. Against left-hander Raudel Lazo (0-1), Leonard hit a ground-rule double to the right-field corner and scored on third baseman Jake Hager's one-out single. Right-hander Jeff Ames (4-1) got the final five outs for the Biscuits.
UP NEXT: The Suns continue their series with Montgomery at 7:05 p.m. Friday, when Suns right-hander Hunter Adkins (0-0) is scheduled to face Biscuits right-hander Taylor Guerrieri (2-4). NAPA Family Fireworks presented by NAPA Auto Care Center will follow the game. The Suns will wear red jerseys for Red Shirt Friday, when fans who wear red to support the military can save $1 off a ticket at the box office or donate the $1 to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Florida Blue will have a goodie table and a photo booth on the concourse. Friday's theme is Super Nintendo Night.
