Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Biscuits (55-52) used the power of Junior Caminero and Tanner Murray to sweep the Birmingham Barons (38-69) on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium, taking both games by scores of 9-5 and 5-3.
The first run of the game belonged to Birmingham as Wilfred Veras recorded an RBI-double to make the score 1-0 in the top of the first inning. It was the first of four earned runs that Victor Muñoz would surrender during his 12th start of the season.
Montgomery made a response in the bottom of the inning, with Caminero launching a solo-home run past right-center field and Ronny Simon bringing in Murray with a single. It was the third home run allowed in as many starts for Ky Bush (1-5), who was traded from the Rocket City Trash Pandas on July 26.
The Barons fired back in the second with a double from Jose Rodriguez that was immediately followed by a triple from Terrell Tatum. The scoring streak continued in the bottom-frame when Heriberto Hernandez hit the second solo-shot of the afternoon to close the gap for the Biscuits, making the score 4-3.
Tristan Peters tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI-double to right field and Caminero put Montgomery ahead 6-4 with a two-run homer. Bush would finish the inning before being relieved by Adisyn Coffey, ending his day with six earned runs off eight hits and three walks over four innings pitched.
Veras recorded his second RBI of the game on a ground ball to second base, but Caminero erased it with a three-run home run in the sixth to extend the Biscuits lead to four runs. The third baseman finished Game 1 with six RBIs on three home runs. Both marks are team-highs for the season and paved the way for the Butter and Blue's first win of the series, 9-5.
Graeme Stinson (3-4) earned the win while Bush took the loss and Antonio Menendez earned his first Double-A save of the season. The four home runs in Game 1 were just shy of the team record of five that was matched on May 25 against the Biloxi Shuckers.
The Biscuits struck first in Game 2 when Matt Thompson surrendered a sacrifice fly to Logan Driscoll in the first. One inning later, Caminero recorded his seventh RBI of the day when he sent a ground ball into left field for a single and made the score 2-0.
The Barons found success against Logan Workman (3-2) in the fourth inning, starting with a solo-home run for Rodriguez. Veras tied the game with an RBI-single, but a forceout from Tim Elko allowed Bryan Ramos to score and take the lead for Birmingham.
Driscoll recorded his second RBI of the contest with a forceout in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at 3-3. Neither side could score in the sixth, setting up the opportunity for an exciting finish in the seventh.
The Barons failed to score in the top of the inning after being retired in order by Workman, who pitched a complete game for the Butter and Blue. Simon walked to first and advanced to second on a throwing error before Murray walked off the game with a two-run homer.
Workman earned the win while Chase Plymell (0-2) took the loss as Montgomery completed the sweep and avoided dropping the series. It was the eighth walk-off victory of the season and the first since July 23.
The Biscuits and Barons will close the series on Sunday, August 13 with first pitch set for 3:33 PM CT. The ballgame will include a Lil' Crumbs Backpack Giveaway presented by Whataburger and features a pitching matchup of Mason Montgomery (4-4) against Jake Eder (0-0) for Birmingham.
