Delaware Blue Coats News Release

WILMINGTON - The Delaware Blue Coats (18-11) were defeated by the Birmingham Squadron (14-16) by a final score of 115-111 on Saturday, March 16 at Chase Fieldhouse.

The Coats got off to a slow start against the Squadron, being outscored 35-24 in the first quarter. Delaware edged Birmingham by seven from that point forward and took the lead halfway through the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome a late surge from the Squadron and come out with the victory.

"We've got to understand that the game starts at 6:00, not at 6:45 when we start playing harder, together and with more urgency," head coach Mike Longabardi said. "We spotted them 35-24 to start the first quarter, then it's an uphill battle the whole way. You can't do that all the time."

For the second consecutive night, Terquavion Smith scored 26 points and led the team in scoring despite playing only 24 minutes. The Coats' second leading scorer, Chris Clarke, also came off the bench and scored 17 points. Jared Brownridge led all starters with 14 points.

Malcolm Hill led the Squadron with 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds, followed by Jalen Crutcher with 22 points, which included four clutch free throws towards the end of the fourth quarter. Dereon Seabron rounded out Birmingham's nine-man rotation with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Up next for the Blue Coats is a matchup with the Indiana Mad Ants, a game that will kickoff a two-game road trip. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
