Birmingham (AL) - The Charlotte Independence's eight game unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday night in a 1-0 loss at BBVA Compass Field against Birmingham Legion FC. In an evenly fought match, the only difference in the score came in the 28th minute off a of a deflected shot.
The best first half scoring opportunity for the Independence came in the 14th minute when Enzo Martinez's in-swinging corner kick was knocked on by Hugh Roberts, but just wide of the Legion net. Later in the half, Columbus Crew SC loanee, JJ Williams lined up a shot that deflected up off of Independence midfielder Kevan George foot and floated in for the only score of the game.
The Independence would dominate possession (60.3%) and shots in the second half, but Birmingham kept the away side scoreless. The shutout was the first since Independence Head Coach Mike Jeffries took over in mid-June.
The Independence will next be in USL Championship action on Saturday, August 3rd as Louisville City FC visits the Sportsplex at Matthews. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET and the game is presented by Great Clips. Fans will be treated royally with complimentary blue hair dying. Tickets are available at charlotteindependence.com.
