Real Monarchs News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - Real Monarchs SLC (8-6-4, 28 points) fell by a 3-1 result against San Antonio FC at Toyota Field on Saturday, ending its undefeated streak at six matches.
MF Luis Palma found the lone goal for the Monarchs on the night, while GK David Ochoa helped limit the damage with by registering five saves.
In a dramatic first half, SAFC was able to get on the board early through striker Brian Gomez, who floated a ball over Ochoa while he was off his line. FW Lionel Etoundi almost found an equalizer soon after, making a quick turn in the box but was denied as his shot was blocked by an SAFC defender. In the 31st minute, San Antonio picked up its second goal as forward Frank López rifled a shot that Ochoa was able to get a touch to, but it just wasn't enough as the ball bounced under the bar and in.
In the 42nd minute, Real Monarchs went down a man after Etoundi was shown red for a late tackle on San Antonio goalkeeper Matt Cardone. Despite the man advantage, some bad communication between the backline of SAFC provided Palma with the opportunity to cut one back on an open goal.
As the Monarchs moved into the second half, it controlled the majority of match despite being down man. Throughout the half, the Monarchs put 10 shots towards goal. MFs Jack Blake, Maikel Chang and Palma each continued to force Viscosi into coming up big with shots that would see the San Antonio goalkeeper put to the test. The match was put to rest however, as San Antonio found a third goal through Billy Forbes, who fired a shot from close range into the top of the net.
UP NEXT: Real Monarchs SLC returns home to Zions Bank Stadium to host Four Corners regional rival Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. The match-up is scheduled for Friday, August 2, with a kick-off time of 8:00 p.m. MT
GOAL SCORING RUNDOWN
SAFC: Brian Gomez, 15th minute: San Antonio broke on the attack as GK David Ochoa came off his line to punch away the clearance, but the ball fell to the feet of Gomez. Gomez took advantage of Ochoa being off his line with a chip to get the ball over and into the far corner for the first goal of the night.
SAFC: Frank López (Cristian Parano), 31st minute: Parano got into the middle of the park with speed and found López on the wing. López rifled a shot at an angle that GK David Ochoa was able to get down and get a touch on, but it just wasn't enough as the ball bounced under and in for the San Antonio second.
SLC: Luis Palma, 45th+6 minute: San Antonio FC defender Michael Lahoud sent an errant pass to goalkeeper Jonathan Viscosi. The two were not on the same page however, as the ball slipped beneath Viscosi, allowing for Palma to speed in behind and cut back a goal on a wide-open net.
SAFC: Billy Forbes (Frank López), 83rd minute: Just moments after play resumed from a short freekick, Billy Forbes found space in the Monarchs defense to bring the ball within 6-yards of the goal. Forbes took a chance and fired the shot into the roof of the net to put the game away.
KEY SAVES AND DEFENSIVE STOPS
SLC: David Ochoa, 8th minute: Ochoa kept the early scoring clean with a massive diving save as San Antonio got a quick and strong shot in towards goal that was aimed for the far post. Ochoa made a dive with an outreached save to deflect the ball out.
