
Birds swept in double-header

St. Paul, MN - The Sioux Falls Canaries (17-30) were swept in a doubleheader with the St. Paul Saints (25-22) on Friday night in St. Paul. The Saints took game one 7-4 and game two 9-2.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Saints took an early lead scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Chaz Lytle reached on a fielder's choice and Adam Olow singled to put runners on the corners for Derrick White. White hit a groundball to shortstop Angelo Fermin that was misplayed. The error allowed Lytle to score for a 1-0 lead. Brian Sprout followed with a double to score Olow putting the Saints in front by a pair, 2-0. Pat Scalabrini drew a walk to load the bases and Jose Torres drew a walk to force in Derek White and put St. Paul ahead 3-0.
The Saints broadened their lead in the bottom of the third inning. With Derek White on third base, Jeremy Frost hit his ninth homer of the season to give the Saints a 5-0 lead.
The Canaries got on the board in the fifth inning. Chris Hall singled and advanced to second base on a single by David Hoffman. Angelo Fermin bunted the runners to second and third base. Jake Smith followed with a groundout to score Hall for the first RBI of Smith's professional career. After four and a half innings the Saints led, 5-1.
The Saints extended their lead in the home half of the fifth. With Adam Olow on first base Pat Scalabrini singled to left field. Ralph Santana misplayed the ball in left allowing the runners to second and third base. Jeremy Frost followed with a single to bring them both home for a 7-1 lead.
The Canaries got a pair of runs back in the sixth inning when Chad Hermansen broke two Canaries records. Hermansen doubled for a record 35th time this season to score John Schmitz and make it 7-2. Hermansen then scored his 77th run of the season on a single by Bubba Smith bringing the Birds within four, 7-3. Hermansen now holds the Canaries records for doubles and runs scored in a single season.
The Birds got one more in the seventh inning when Ralph Santana singled to score Jake Smith for the 7-4 final. Sioux Falls would come no closer in the game one loss.
The Saints scored early and often in game two. The Saints got a pair of runs in the first inning when Nick Gretz doubled Josh Renick and Adam Olow for a 2-0 lead.
St. Paul added two more in the second. Jeremy Frost and Steve Butler got on with walks and scored on singles by Josh Renick and Adam Olow respectively. After two innings, the Saints led, 4-0.
In the third inning Brian Sprout tripled and scored on a passed ball to give the Saints a five-run lead, 5-0.
The Canaries got on the board in the fifth inning. Angelo Fermin singled and advanced on a single by Jake Smith. Fermin scored on a single by Ralph Santana closing the gap to four, 5-1.
The Saints got the run back in the bottom of the fifth. Brian Sprout singled and advanced to third on a throwing error by Kenta Suzumegano. Jeremy Frost singled to score Sprout for his fifth RBI of the doubleheader. The run put the Saints ahead, 6-1.
St. Paul added three more in the sixth. Jose Torres and Adam Olow walked and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Nick Gretz doubled to score them both for an 8-1 lead. Mike Meyer pinch ran for Gretz and scored on a wild pitch for a 9-1 advantage.
The Birds got one back in the seventh when Ralph Santana doubled to score Kenta Suzumegano who had been hit by a pitch. The run was the last of the game in St. Paul's 9-2 victory.
Mike Meyer (10-8) picked up the game one win for St. Paul while Charlie Rudd (8-6) got the nod in game two. Matt Hammons closed out game one for his 22nd save of the season. Sean Donlin (0-7) and Aaron Garrison (6-7) took the losses for the Canaries.
The 2006 season will wrap-up with the third game of the series on Saturday night at Midway Stadium.
