Pensacola Pelicans News Release
It was "Fan Appreciation Night" at Pelican Park and more than 2,200 fans were very appreciative of the thousands of giveaways and prizes given away throughout the night plus a great game between Shreveport and Pensacola. The Pelicans and Sports battled all night long with the game coming down to one perfect throw in the 8th inning which prevented to the game-tying run from scoring. Shreveport held on to win game three 5-4.
Pensacola got on the board first in the 1st inning by way of a solo homerun from Ed Montague. That long ball was Montague's 6th homerun of the season in his last game in a Pelicans uniform this season. After the game, he left to join the Quebec Capitales of the Can-Am League.
Shreveport tied the game in the 2nd and the Pels re-took the lead as Drake Wade hit a homerun in nearly the same spot as Montague's. His 3rd bomb of the season gave the Pelicans a 2-1 lead.
After a scoreless 3rd frame, Shreveport used a long ball of their own to take the lead. Al Corbeil and Enohel Polanco led off the inning with back-to-back singles. The next batter, Tommy Bryant cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left field, his 4th of the season.
In the bottom of the inning, Pensacola's Jose Yepez cut the lead to one with the team's 3rd solo homerun of the night.
Pensacola tied the game in the 6th when George Branch scored off an RBI single from Drake Wade. That was Wade's second hit and second RBI of the night.
The lead changed once again, this time in Shreveport's favor. Neb Brown led off the 7th inning with a double. Todd Self quickly singled to score Brown and give the Sports the one run lead.
The Pelicans nearly tied the game in the 8th if it weren't for a perfect throw from Shreveport right-fielder Austin Easley. Rolo Avila was gunned down at home who tried to score from second base on a Drake Wade single.
Gerson Mercedes recorded his 8th save of the season in the 9th inning.
