
'Birds Sweep Doubleheader from 'Cats

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Delmarva Shorebirds took both ends of a twin bill from the Lynchburg Hillcats, winning 8-6 and 3-0 on Wednesday night at Bank of the James Stadium.
The Shorebirds (33-16) have now run their winning streak to seven in a row and taken the first three games of the series against the Hillcats (25-24).
Game One
Two scoreless innings breezed by before the Shorebirds cracked the scoreboard in the third inning. With two away, Jean Carmona singled to center and then stole second base. The next batter Mason Janvrin proceeded to smash a two-run homer, his fifth of the season, to give Delmarva a 2-0 lead.
Two more came across for the Shorebirds in the fourth. Hudson Haskin beat out a bunt single to start the frame and was followed by a TT Bowens single and a Ryne Ogren walk to load the bases. Yorkislandy Alvarez then bounced into a double play that brought in Haskin and left Bowens at third. Bowens then came in to score on a wild pitch, making it 4-0 Shorebirds.
Gabriel Rodriguez hit a solo shot, his first of the year, in the bottom of the fourth to get Lynchburg on the board.
In the sixth, Haskin tripled with one away before Bowens walked to put men on the corners. An errant pickoff throw to first then brought Haskin in with Bowens moving to second. A wild pitch moved Bowens to third before Ogren and Alvarez walked to load the bases. Andrew Martinez lifted a fly ball down the right field line, deep enough to score Bowens, but Ogren was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second on the sacrifice fly.
Another solo homer, this one for Ike Freeman, his first of the year, clawed Lynchburg back to 6-2.
With one away in the seventh, Jean Carmona tripled and one out later scored on a wild pitch. Darell Hernaiz kickstarted a two out rally with a walk before Haskin doubled him home.
Lynchburg made a game of it by plating four in the bottom of the seventh and eventually brought the tying run to the plate, by Leonardo Rodriguez struck out Alexfri Planez to close out the 8-6 Delmarva victory.
Brandon Young (3-0) started for the Shorebirds and was solid, allowing just one run over five frames on six hits and a walk, striking out six.
Daniel Espino (1-1) fanned 13 for the Hillcats but was still hung with the loss after allowing six runs on five hits and two walks in 5.1 innings.
Rodriguez earned his second save of the season despite allowing two hits.
Haskin continued his torrid start to the Lynchburg series by going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple plus an RBI and run scored. Out of the no. 9 hole, Carmona also had multiple hits (2-for-3) with two runs scored.
Lynchburg collected 12 hits with Rodriguez leading the charge by going 3-for-4 with a homer and a double with 2 RBIs.
Game Two
After a strikeout began the game, Darell Hernaiz followed it up with a solo homer, his third of the season, to give the Shorebirds an early 1-0 lead.
Hudson Haskin worked a walk to begin the fourth and TT Bowens followed by pounding a ball over the wall, his sixth of the year, to make it 3-0 Shorebirds which wound up being the final score.
Ignacio Feliz, Luis Perez, and Kyle Martin combined to stymie the Hillcats down the stretch for the shutout.
Perez (1-0) earned the win in his first Delmarva appearance, firing three shutout frames out of the bullpen, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out five.
Jamie Arias (3-2) started and absorbed the loss for Lynchburg, conceding three runs on four hits and a walk in 3.2 innings, striking out six.
Martin picked up his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth, striking out two while walking one.
Feliz started for Delmarva and flung three no-hit innings, striking out four.
Hernaiz (2-for-4, Solo Homer) and Bowens (2-R Homer) provided all the offense the Shorebirds would need in the game.
Lynchburg was held to two hits, singles for Yainer Diaz and Ike Freeman.
The Shorebirds look for an early series win against the Hillcats in game four of the series on Thursday, July 1. Shane Davis (3-1, 4.64) goes for Delmarva against Juan Zapata (1-0, 2.03) for Lynchburg. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Bank of the James Stadium.
