Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds were unable to bounce back from a mid-innings offensive surge from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans as they fell 8-3 on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
With their second straight loss against the Pelicans, the Shorebirds (5-7) fell to two games under .500 for the first time this season.
Delmarva broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. Davis Tavárez legged out an infield single to start the frame and Isaac Bellony followed with a walk. Tavárez then swiped third and Bellony moved to second on a groundout. After a strikeout, Luis Valdez poked a single to right to score both runners and make it 2-0 Delmarva.
A quick start to the fourth tied the game for Myrtle Beach. Jacob Wetzel doubled to start the inning and Miguel Fabrizio slashed a triple to score him. Malcom Quintero then singled in Fabrizio to tie the game at 2-2.
The fourth inning kicked off a run of four straight frames where Myrtle Beach plated two runs in each inning to pad their lead. In the fifth, Wetzel produced an RBI single and then scored later in the inning on a wild pitch. The sixth saw an error plate a run with two away before Fabrizio brought in another with a double. Sacrifice flies from Liam Spence and Ezequiel Pagan in the seventh produced the two runs in that frame.
The Shorebirds were only able to answer in the bottom of the sixth with a Josué Cruz RBI double as the consistent barrage from Myrtle Beach produced an 8-3 win for the Pelicans.
Walker Powell (2-0) garnered the win out of the bullpen for Myrtle Beach. Powell allowed just one run on two hits while striking out seven without a walk.
Raúl Rangel (0-1) suffered the loss for Delmarva after conceding two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning.
The Shorebirds will try to rebound against the Pelicans on Friday, April 22 at Perdue Stadium. Juan De Los Santos (1-1, 1.04) draws the start for Delmarva against Richard Gallardo (0-0, 5.87) for Myrtle Beach. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
