(SIOUX FALLS, SD) â With the 2003 regular season less than a week away, the Sioux Falls Canaries continued to pare their roster towards its final number, all the while looking to improve, announcing the signing of LHP Ryan Lupul, who comes off an outstanding career at William Penn University. The club also announced that they have released LHP's Tony O' Donnell and Jacoby Marshall.
The 23-year-old Lupul recently finished a dominating senior season that saw him go 4-4 with a 1.16 ERA. The southpaw pitched in 11 games, starting nine of them, tossing six complete games. He allowed opponents to hit .177 against him, permitting just 48 base-runners in 62 innings of work.
Lupul, a Prince George, British Columbia native, earned NAIA All-American honors following the 2002 season when he finished second in the nation in strikeouts (81). He was originally selected by the Texas Rangers in the 2000 draft, but did not sign.
With the release of O'Donnell and Marshall, who had signed with the club out of the team's open try-out camp, the Canaries now must trim two more players from their roster before Friday's Northern League opener.
The Birds kick off the 2003 season on May 23rd in Schaumburg before opening up the home schedule with a May 26th clash against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. Great season tickets and mini plans are now on sale and can be ordered by calling (605) 333-0179.
