Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds broke out offensively on Tuesday night with a season-high 18 runs for a blowout victory against the Lexington Legends. Delmarva (10-9, 43-44) matched their largest margin of victory this year with an 18-6 final in the series opener.
Early on, the game opened as a close contest. Delmarva held a 1-0 lead helped by an error, after Rifaela reached on a poor throw, and then Logan Uxa ripped an RBI double in the first inning. Two-out RBI hits by Ryan O'Hearn and Wander Franco put Lexington ahead 2-1 in the third.
Cam Kneeland hit his second home run in four days, a three-run blast for a 4-2 lead in the third inning. A four-run fourth inning started to put the game out of reach. Steve Wilkerson lifted a two-run double to left field, along with RBI knocks by Rifaela and Uxa.
Three straight singles in the sixth inning, plus a fielding error led to two more runs for Delmarva. Lexington ended the string of nine unanswered runs with a two-run double by Chad Johnson in the seventh. Still, the Shorebirds led comfortably 10-4 at the seventh inning stretch.
The night was far from over for the Delmarva offense, as T.J. Olesczuk belted an RBI double in the seventh. The Shorebirds then scored seven runs in the eighth inning, matching the Shorebirds' high for a single frame this season. The rally was capped by an RBI single by Derek Peterson, a two-run double by Olesczuk and a two-run home run by Ronarsy Ledesma.
John Means delivered his fifth quality start of the year, tied for the most on the team. Means picked up his sixth win, pitching six innings while allowing just two runs on six hits and setting a career-high with eight strikeouts. Scott Blewett took the loss for Lexington while surrendering eight runs in 3.2 innings.
The Shorebirds will go for a series win on Wednesday evening, building off three consecutive victories. Right-hander Lucas Long (2-3, 5.18) will start for Delmarva opposite left-hander Foster Griffin (0-3, 6.46). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
