'Birds Ride Five-Run Second, Quality Start from Ryan Long, to 6-2 Win over Mudcats

ZEBULON, N.C. - The Delmarva Shorebirds got an all-around solid performance on both sides of the ball in a 6-2 victory over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night at Five County Stadium.
The contest between the Shorebirds (28-56, 7-12) and Mudcats (42-43, 8-11) started late after an hour and 31 minute delay due to rain and lightning in the area.
Once the game finally got going, the Shorebirds got to work in the second inning. Back-to-back singles from Cristopher Cespedes and Isaac De Leon started the frame before Trendon Craig tripled them both home. After a strikeout, Craig scored on a Roberto Martinez groundout. Michael Mantecón restarted the rally with a base hit and Luis Valdez followed suit with one of his own. Elio Prado then singled to center, scoring Mantecon, with Valdez coming into score when Prado advanced to second on the throw in, making it a 5-0 Delmarva lead.
The Shorebirds tacked on another run in the fifth on a De Leon double, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Carolina finally got on the board in the eighth as after a leadoff single, three straight walks forced home a run. The Mudcats rally was stopped in its tracks though when Stiven Acevedo turned a double play by throwing out a runner at the plate trying to score on a flyout.
The Mudcats got another run in the ninth on back-to-back doubles from Jean Carmona and Luis Silva, but it was too little too late as the Shorebirds held on for a 6-2 win.
Ryan Long (4-4) picked up the win for the Shorebirds with six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and a walk, striking out five. The quality start is the first in Long's career as he retired 12 in a row at one point as well.
Carlos Rodriguez (2-4) absorbed the loss for the Mudcats. Rodriguez allowed five runs in 3.2 innings on seven hits and a walk, striking out six.
The Shorebirds continue their six-game series with the Carolina Mudcats on Saturday, July 16 at Five County Stadium. The Shorebirds hand the ball to Juan De Los Santos (2-7, 4.19) while the Mudcats counter with Alexander Cornielle (4-7, 3.80). First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 4:45 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
