July 15, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
In a game that only saw eight combined hits, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans came out victorious over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers 2-0 on Friday night. The win evens the series at two, as the Pelicans now hold a 57-28 overall record and 10-9 in the second half. The Woodpeckers fell to 37-46 and 6-12 in the second half with the loss.
All five hits for the Pelicans came with two outs as Kevin Alcantara (1-3, RBI, R) and Ezequiel Pagan (1-3, 2B, RBI) brought home both runs in the sixth inning. James Triantos (2-4, 2B, R) was the only Pelican with a multi-hit performance.
It was a memorable night for the Pelicans' pitching staff as they held the Woodpeckers to just three hits and collected their ninth shutout of the season. Frankie Scalzo (3-3) earned the win with 2 2/3 innings in relief of hitless baseball with five strikeouts and a walk. Starter Tyler Santana lasted 5 1/3 with just two hits allowed and six strikeouts with Angel Hernandez picking up his second save of the year with one strikeout in the ninth.
Fayetteville left six runners on base while going 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Joey Loperfido (1-4), Jaxon Hallmark (1-3), and Yeuris Ramirez (1-3) posted the only hits of the game.
Edinson Batista (4-3) took the loss despite logging a quality start with two earned runs across his five innings with nine strikeouts.
The Woodpeckers threatened in the top of the sixth inning as Santana hit Cody Orr and walked Leosdany Molina with one out. Scalzo came out of the bullpen and got a flyout and strikeout to end the inning unharmed.
With two outs in the bottom half, Triantos doubled to the wall in left-center to get into scoring position. Alcantara followed with a line-drive single up the middle to bring in the first run of the game. After advancing on a wild pitch, Alcantara came in on a double to right-center by Pagan to make it 2-0 Myrtle Beach.
With Hernandez on the mound for the Pelicans in the top of the ninth, the Woodpeckers made one last push. Loperfido started the inning with a single to right field to bring the tying run to the plate. He moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout. With two outs in the inning, Hernandez struck out Tyler Whitaker to end the game.
The Pelicans will meet the Woodpeckers for game five of the series on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.
