Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Off a double-digit run and strikeout performance, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans won their first game of the week 11-4 over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Thursday night. With the win, the Pelicans improved to 56-28 with a 9-9 second-hal record. The Woodpeckers dropped to 37-45 and 6-11 in the second half.

Richard Gallardo (5-6) had a career night, smashing his previous high of seven strikeouts with 13 through his six innings. That number is the second-most in a single game by a Pelicans pitcher in franchise history, and the highest since 2017. Gallardo gave up one earned run off a home run and did not issue a walk.

It was a solid night for the Pelicans lineup as well with 11 hits. Matt Warkentin (2-4, 3 RBI, R) led the way with a pair of singles and three runs knocked in. Jacob Wetzel (1-3, 3 RBI, R, BB) also brought in three runs off a single and a groundout. James Triantos (2-5, 2B, R) logged the only extra-base hit of the game for Myrtle Beach.

Thursday's loss went to starter Deylen Miley (2-5) who gave up two earned runs in his three innings off three hits and two walks with one strikeout. Shea Barry sacrificed a bulk of the runs with nine, eight being earned off eight hits and two walks across his three innings out of the bullpen.

Jaxon Hallmark (3-4, HR, 3 RBI) drove in three of the four Fayetteville runs on a solo homer and a pair of RBI singles. Justin Williams (2-4, 2B) also logged a multi-hit game with a double in the defeat.

Myrtle Beach took an early lead in the bottom of the second. With the infield in and runners on second and third, Wetzel lined a single into left field that scored two runs for the early advantage.

The only run scored on Gallardo was Hallmark's solo home run with one out in the top of the third to left field. It was Hallmark's second homer of the year after hitting one out last night.

After Gallardo struck out the side in the top of the fifth, the Pelicans packed on five runs in the bottom half to pull away. Barry came in and loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, single, and walk with one out. Pagan came up and popped up behind Tyler Whitaker at third base as it fell on the grass behind him for an RBI single to go up 3-1. With the bases loaded, Josue Huma beat out an infield single to first base to score another run. Wetzel followed with an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 5-1. Warkentin plated two on his single to left field as Myrtle Beach left the fifth with a 7-1 lead.

Gallardo struck out two in the top of the sixth to bring his total to 13 and gave way for Johzan Oquendo in the seventh. With one out, Oquendo gave up back-to-back singles and balked to move them up to second and third. After a strikeout, Hallmark lined a single to left to bring in a run. Oquendo threw a walk pitch for the second run of the inning to make the score 7-3 Pelicans.

Four more runs were scored by the Pelicans in their half of the seventh to put the game away. With two outs and runners on first and second, Warkentin got his third RBI on a single that dribbled into center field. Malcom Quintero followed with a single to bring home two. The inning would continue following a Juan Mora single as Quintero scored on a fielding error on Barry off a Kevin Made pop-up to go up 11-3.

The final run came home in the ninth for the Woodpeckers as Hallmark hit a pop-up single to first base that scored Rainier Rivas from second.

Friday night will feature game four of the series with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
