Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds punched their way to a four-game split with the Augusta GreenJackets, defeating their first place counterparts 4-3 on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

Michael Baumann (4-0) earned a win in his fourth Quality Start for the Shorebirds (21-10). The Orioles' 15th-ranked prospect allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings, walking two and striking out nine.

Jose Marte (3-1) took the loss for the GreenJackets (20-10), giving up three runs on seven hits in four innings. Reed Hayes nailed down his fourth save for Delmarva with a scoreless ninth.

Delmarva broke out the offense it had pent up from Sunday afternoon's shutout in the second inning. Trevor Craport led off with an infield single and moved up to second on a groundout. Max Hogan and Ben Breazeale drew back-to-back walks to load the bases, and Will Robertson served a liner into center for a two-run single. Kirvin Moesquit followed with a single to left that Nick Hill bobbled, allowing Ben Breazeale to score to make it 3-0 Shorebirds.

The Shorebirds would leave the bases loaded in the inning, though, as a sign of things to come. Delmarva put men in scoring position in the first seven inning but hit just 4-for-18 with RISP and stranded a season-high 13 runners.

Augusta got on the comeback trail with a touch of controversy in the sixth. After Heliot Ramos led off with a double, Manuel Geraldo dragged a bunt to the right side, but was called out on double contact. GreenJacket manager Jolbert Cabrera protested, and after some discussion the umpires ruled Geraldo was still in the box when the ball struck his bat a second time, and the call was reversed to a foul ball. Geraldo dropped the very next pitch into center for a base hit, scoring Ramos to make it 3-1.

Geraldo himself scored on a stolen base, error, and wild pitch to cut it to 3-2.

Delmarva took one of those runs back in its half of the sixth. Moesquit led off with a single, then T.J. Nichting doubled him to third two batters later. After a strikeout, Craport rolled a grounder to the hole on the left side. Shortstop Orlando Garcia closed on the ball but had no play, and Moesquit scored on the infield hit to make it 4-2.

Zach Muckenhirn relieved Baumann in the seventh, issuing a leadoff walk and striking out the next three in succession. In the eighth, Geraldo legged out an infield single to lead off, stole second, and came home on an error at second base to make it a one-run game again. With two on and two out, Muckenhirn went after a pesky Logan Baldwin, striking him out to retire the side.

Jeffry Parra led off the ninth with a walk off of Hayes, and pinch-runner Tyler Brown advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out and Ramos at the plate, Hayes threw another pitch that got away, and Brown took off for third. Breazeale recovered in time, though, throwing out Brown at third base. With the scoring threat erased, Hayes froze Ramos on a 2-2 curveball, finishing off the Shorebird win.

Craport wrapped up his monster homestand by going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. In the seven-game stand, Craport hit .370 (10-for-27) with six runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, and nine RBIs, seven of which came with two outs.

Robertson finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Moesquit went 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Ramos and Geraldo led the way at the one- and two-slots for the GreenJackets. Ramos went 2-for-5 with a double and a run, while Geraldo finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. The rest of the Augusta lineup behind them finished 1-for-23.

The win, coupled with a Kannapolis loss to Hagerstown earlier in the day, gives the Shorebirds sole possession of first place in the SAL North going into the off day.

The Shorebirds now hit the road for seven games, starting on Wednesday morning in Lexington with the first of three against the Legends. Cameron Bishop (3-1, 1.74) gets the nod for Delmarva against a Lexington starter to be announced. First pitch is set for 10:35 a.m. with gates opening at 6:00, and pregame coverage on Fox Sports 960 AM and the MiLB First Pitch App begins at 10:20 with Will DeBoer on the call.
