CHARLESTON, S.C. - Despite three scoreless innings from Carter Baumler in his professional debut, the Delmarva Shorebirds fell 5-3 to the Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark.
It is the second straight loss for the Shorebirds (15-26) to open their series with the RiverDogs (28-13).
The Shorebirds got the scoring starting in the second inning. Noelberth Romero doubled to lead off the frame and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Ryan Higgins drove him in with a base hit to make it 1-0.
The Charleston bats were held at bay until the fifth. Mason Auer singled to start the frame and Abiezel Ramirez then walked before Luis Leon ripped a two-run triple to vault Charleston in front. One batter later, Shane Sasaki drove in Leon with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
The RiverDogs expanded their lead in the seventh. Ramirez reached on an error to start the frame and after a strikeout, Oneill Manzueta tripled him home. Sasaki followed with another RBI triple to make it 5-3.
After singles from Erinson Placencia and Elio Prado started the eighth for the Shorebirds, the two moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, Trendon Craig singled them both home to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The Shorebirds got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Kyle Whitten held on for the save for Charleston.
Over Galue (4-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for Charleston. Galue went four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out four.
Shane Davis (1-4) suffered the loss for Delmarva after conceding five runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks, striking out five in 3.1 innings.
In his professional debut, Carter Baumler went three shutout frames, striking out five while allowing just a hit and a walk.
The Shorebirds continue their series with the RiverDogs on Thursday, May 26. Daniel Federman (0-4, 7.20) is scheduled to go for Delmarva against Christian Fernandez (3-1, 2.82) for Charleston. First pitch from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Ballpark is slated for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
