Birds Drop Series Opener to Red Sox 8-4

Coming off their no-hitter on Sunday, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans sacrificed 13 hits to the Salem Red Sox in an 8-4 loss on Tuesday afternoon. In their five series this year, the Pelicans have now lost three of the first games as they fell to 15-7 on the year. The Red Sox improved to .500 at 11-11 with the home win.

Myrtle Beach collected seven hits with Cole Roederer (2-4) leading the team with the only multi-hit performance in his Pelicans debut. Kevin Made (1-3, RBI, BB) brought home a run in his return from the injured list and Miguel Fabrizio (1-4, RBI) also provided an RBI.

Tyler Schlaffer (0-2) had a rough day on the mound as he pitched the first three innings with four earned runs off six hits. Schlaffer went his outing without a strikeout while walking two. Jose Miguel Gonzalez followed with four earned runs off another six hits in his three innings while walking three and striking out four. Both pitchers committed an error in the loss as well.

Salem's middle infield led the charge for a lineup that tallied 13 hits in the series-opener. Second baseman Brainer Bonaci (2-5, 3B, 4 RBI, R) brought home four runs for the game while shortstop Eddinson Paulino (4-5, 2B, RBI, 2 R) led the team in hits while also driving in a run.

The pitching effort was led by Tyler Uberstine (1-0) who tossed five innings with one earned run off just three hits while striking out three. Felix Cepeda gave up the majority with three runs, one earned off three hits and a walk in his two innings.

With an early start time of 11:05 a.m., the Red Sox were ready from the start with one run in the opening frame. Paulino led off with a double to right and was brought home on a Bonaci single to center in the next at-bat for the game's first run.

The Pelicans responded with a double of their own from Kevin Alcantara to lead off the top of the second. Alcantara went from second to home on Made's groundout to first to tie the game 1-1.

With one out in the bottom of the second, Schlaffer gave up back-to-back walks to Eduardo Lopez and Niko Kavadas then hit Tyler Miller with a pitch to load the bases. Following a mound visit, Eduardo Vaughn softly lined a ball to right to move everyone up and score Lopez as Salem took a 2-1 lead. Paulino followed with a single to right to bring in another run and Bonaci grounded out to first as Miller scored to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

After a quiet third inning, the Red Sox packed it on with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Gonzalez came out of the bullpen for the Pelicans and gave up back-to-back hits from Vaughn and Paulino. Both runners scored on Bonaci's triple to center field to extend the Salem lead to 6-1. Bonaci came home on a sacrifice fly to right field by Miguel Ugueto. With two outs in the inning, Blaze Jordan and Eduardo Lopez both singled and Kavadas walked to load the bases back up. Miller drew the second walk in a row to score Jordan and push Salem's lead to 8-1.

Myrtle Beach scored their final runs with one in the seventh and two in the eighth. Triantos singled to start the seventh innings but was forced out at second with Alcantara reaching on a fielder's choice. Made drew a walk before being the victim of another force out at second as Malcom Quintero reached to move runners to the corners. Fabrizio cashed in with a single to right to score Alcantara from third.

The final two runs for the Pelicans came in the top of the eighth. Roederer punched his second hit of the day with one out to center field. Juan Mora followed by getting hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Triantos grounded to Jordan at third as he stepped on the base to force Roederer out for the second out of the inning. With both runners going on contact with two outs, Alcantara popped up into shallow left field. The ball was missed by second baseman Bonaci to score two runs and make the score 8-4 Red Sox.

Myrtle Beach and Salem will meet for game two of the series on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m.
