SALISBURY, MD - After battling back to tie the game at 4-4 in the third inning, the Delmarva Shorebirds couldn't get over the hump late as they were defeated 7-4 by the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

After winning the opening game of the series, the Shorebirds (5-10) were handed losses in the next five by the Pelicans (10-5) as they took the series.

Myrtle Beach got on the board immediately in the first. Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled on the game's first pitch and after Juan Mora walk and James Triantos single the Pelicans had the bases loaded. After a fielder's choice cut down a run at the plate, Malcom Quintero ripped a two-run double to right-center to start the scoring. Yeison Santana then reached on an error on a groundball that plated another run before Ezequiel Pagan dropped in an RBI single to make it 4-0.

Josué Cruz got the scoring started for the Shorebirds with an RBI single in the second after Davis Tavárez had singled and gone to second on an error, making it 4-1.

A three-run rally tied the game at 4-4 for the Shorebirds in the third. With one out Luis Valdez single and Ryan Higgins then reached on a fielder's choice with a subsequent error allowing Valdez to go to third. Greg Cullen followed with a laser into right-center, racing all the way to third with a triple, driving in two runs. Isaac Bellony then plated Cullen with a groundout to tie the game at 4-4.

The score stayed knotted until the sixth. Crow-Armstrong singled with one out and then moved to second on a wild pitch and Mora then singled to drive him in and put Myrtle Beach back in front. A Triantos single put two aboard before an error on a groundball allowed Mora to score and push the Myrtle Beach lead out to 6-4.

The Pelicans added an insurance run in the eighth to make it 7-4 as what looked to be a botched double steal with men at first and third turned into a run scored after Crow-Armstrong emerged unscathed from a rundown at the plate.

Riley Martin (1-0) collected the win out of the bullpen for Myrtle Beach with three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.

Conor Grady (1-1) suffered the loss for Delmarva as he conceded three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk, striking out two.

Sheldon Reed collected his second save for Myrtle Beach, striking out the side in order in the ninth.

After an off-day Monday, the Shorebirds kick off a 12-game road trip with a six-game set against the Augusta GreenJackets on Tuesday, April 26. Starters for the series opener have not been announced. First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 a.m. from SRP Park with pregame coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
