Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - Behind the right arms of Griffin McLarty and Jake Lyons, the Delmarva Shorebirds coasted to a 5-1 win on Thursday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Shorebirds (24-13) and moved them four games ahead of the Red Sox (21-18) in the standings.
The Shorebirds got the scoring started in the second inning. Jordan Cannon walked with one away before Cristopher Cespedes replaced him at first on a fielder's choice. Trevor Kehe then bounced a single to right, sending Cespedes to third. Jean Carmona then ripped a single to center to score Cespedes and make it 1-0 Delmarva. After a walk to Mason Janvrin loaded the bases, Andrew Martinez hit a grounder to shortstop that was booted, allowing Kehe to score, putting Delmarva up 2-0.
Salem trimmed their deficit in half when Jake MacKenzie smashed a solo homer to left, his first of the year, to lead off the fifth, making it 2-1.
From there however it was all Delmarva. In the bottom of the fifth, TT Bowens doubled to begin the frame and one out later advanced to third on a groundout that coaxed a throwing error, allowing Bowens to score, restoring Delmarva's two run advantage.
Two more came home for Delmarva in the sixth. Mason Janvrin doubled to begin the inning and then advanced to third on a passed ball when Andrew Martinez walked. Darell Hernaiz then dropped down a perfect push bunt for a hit, scoring Janvrin, to make it 4-1. A fielder's choice then put runners at the corners and a subsequent wild pitch allowed Martinez to score from third, bringing the score to its final line of 5-1.
Jake Lyons (1-1) earned his first win of the season for Delmarva. Lyons was dominant, tossing 4.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out eight. At one point, Lyons retired 10 Salem batters in a row.
Bradley Blalock (0-3) started and suffered the loss for Salem. Blalock lasted two frames, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks, striking out three.
Griffin McLarty started for Delmarva but did not factor into the decision. McLarty was stellar over 4.1 innings, striking out seven while walking just one and allowing one run on three hits.
Kehe led the charge for Delmarva, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. Seven of nine Delmarva players recorded at least one hit.
MacKenzie's homer was the first of his career and provided the only offense for Salem in the contest.
The Shorebirds will try to make it two in a row against the Red Sox on Friday, June 18, at Perdue Stadium. Ignacio Feliz (1-0, 1.59) is slated to start for Delmarva against Shane Drohan (1-1, 3.29) for Salem. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek on the call.
