Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
SIOUX FALLS, SD (April 25, 2008) - This summer, local performer and composer Jeremy Hegg will be returning to the Birdcage for a second season in charge of the Canaries music operations. During the seventh inning stretch, Hegg will sing the full version of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, in honor of the baseball anthem's 100th anniversary.
"Jeremy brought something special to our ballpark last summer, and this year he is going to add a special touch to Take Me Out to the Ballgame," said Canaries Director of Promotions Nate Welch. "Most baseball fans are familiar with the chorus, but we will celebrate the song's centennial anniversary by introducing our fans to the full version of the song."
Take Me Out to the Ballgame was originally written in 1908 by Jack Norworth and set to music by Albert Von Tilzer. The song has been recorded numerous times in the 100 years since it was written, including a version sung by Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra for the 1949 film of the same name.
A native of Dell Rapids, Hegg came to Sioux Falls in 1990 when he enrolled at Augustana College. At Augustana, Jeremy studied music and wrote his first concert band piece. Today, he writes arrangements for several high school marching band shows, including Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Washington High Schools. Hegg is also a part of the band Spooncat!, which has shared the stage with Ziggy Marley, Delbert McClinton, The Doobie Brothers, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies.
The Sioux Falls Canaries will open the 2008 American Association season on May 8 with a visit to the defending champion Fort Worth Cats. The Canaries home opener is on Tuesday, May 13, when the club will host the Pensacola Pelicans in their "Season Premier" featuring a post-game fireworks display presented by First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard.
