Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Alex Lange and the Pelicans' pitching staff fired a combined 6.2 innings without allowing a hit and the Birds hung on for a 3-2 victory against the Salem Red Sox on Saturday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Lange (1-4) put together his best outing of the season to earn his first win of the year for the Birds. Lange struck out the side in the first inning and cruised through five innings without allowing a run while striking out seven.
Myrtle Beach (9-21) took the lead in the fourth inning when Luke Reynolds blasted a three-run homer of off Salem (12-17) starter Bryan Mata (1-1) to put the Pelicans in front 3-0.
In the sixth inning, Jake Stinnett took over on the mound to make his first appearance of the year for Myrtle Beach. Stinnett fired another hitless inning for the Birds to extend the no-hitter into the seventh.
Ryan Fitzgerald led off the seventh inning with a walk, but was retired on a fielders choice from the next hitter, Dylan Hardy. A throwing error moved Hardy to second base with one out in the inning, but the no-hitter was still in tact. The next batter Joseph Monge reached on an error to put runners at the corners.
Jonathan Ortega then grounded into a fielders choice that brought Hardy in to score from third to make it 3-1 Pelicans. Ortega advanced to second on the play because of another error, the third of the inning. With two outs in the top of the seventh, the no-hitter ended when Nick Sciortino reached first on an infield single up the middle. The hit put runners at first and third and Ortega came in to score on a Stinnett balk to cut the Pelicans' lead to 3-2.
Stinnett was able to hang on to get out of the inning and turned things over to Tommy Nance in the eighth and ninth innings.
Nance was able to shut the Red Sox down in the final two frames and struck out Sciortino to end the game.
Myrtle Beach has taken the first two games of the series and will go for the series sweep on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. The Pelicans will send Luis Lugo (0-1, 3.79) to the bump against Daniel Gonzalez (1-2, 3.38) for the Red Sox in the series finale.
