Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
Wichita, KS - The Sioux Falls Canaries (6-9) were shutout for the fourth time in nine games as they lost 7-0 to the Wichita Wingnuts (6-10) on Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
The Wingnuts took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Josh Horn started the inning with a single. After a balk called on Canaries starting pitcher Ryan Ford moved Horn into scoring position, he came in to score on a single by Dustan Mohr. After one inning, the Birds trailed 1-0.
Wichita added to their advantage in the second. Joe Muich and Mike Thompson opened the inning with back-to-back base hits. After Brenan Herrera laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, Muich was brought home on a groundout by Josh Horn. Horn's RBI put the Wingnuts up 2-0. Nick Blasi followed with a two-run homer to extend the Wichita advantage to four runs, 4-0.
The Wingnuts got three more in the fourth inning. With two in scoring position, Blasi hit a sacrifice fly to score Mike Thompson for a 5-0 lead. Greg Porter doubled to bring home Herrera for a 6-0 lead, and Porter then scored on a single by Mohr for the 7-0 final.
Ryan Ford (2-7) suffered the loss for the Canaries, giving up seven runs on eight hits in four innings of work. Amad Stephens, Patrick Lawler, and Pat Mahomes, cleaned up the final four innings of the game without allowing a base-runner.
