Massetti, Captains down Cats 5-2

SHREVEPORT - Shreveport-Bossier right-hander Luke Massetti allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work as the Captains defeated the Cats 5-2 on Saturday night at Fair Grounds Field.

With the win, Shreveport-Bossier took 3-of-4 from the Cats in a series for the second time this season.

The Captains scored first for the fourth time in the series as they posted a two-run second inning. In the second, Andres Rodriguez led off with an infield single before Selwyn Langaigne hit a bouncer to first. Pat O'Sullivan tried to turn two, but his throw to second hit Rodriguez in the back, allowing both runners to advance. Later in the inning, Dwayne White brought home a run with an ground out to second and Jonathan Reynoso made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.

Fort Worth cut the lead in half in the third as Ron Fenwick reached on an error to start the inning. After Matt Combs was hit by a pitch and Brian Fryer reached on an infield single, Cameron Blair delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1.

Shreveport-Bossier added two runs in the bottom of the third as Bryan Sabatella and Richard Paz drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Jose Torres hit into a double play, scoring the third run, followed by an RBI single by Langaigne for a 4-1 Captains advantage.

The Cats pulled to within two runs in the top of the eighth as Blair singled to lead of the inning, followed by a double to left by Michael Bell. Ryan Patterson brought home Blair with a sacrifice fly, but Fort Worth could not push another run across the board as they went to the bottom of the eighth trailing 4-2. In the last of the eighth, Jose Torres hit his second home run in as many nights to extend the Shreveport-Bossier lead to 5-2.

Massetti notched his sixth win of the season as he went seven, allowed two runs, one earned on six hits for the victory.

Matt Gibbs (1-2) permitted four runs, only one earned on three hits in 6 1/3 innings to suffer his second loss of the season.

Justin Dowdy recorded two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning to pick up his 13th save of the season, as he closed out the Cats in the ninth.

The Cats return to LaGrave Field Sunday night for a four-game set with Grand Prairie. Game time Sunday is at 6:05 p.m. with Ryan Riddle on the mound for Fort Worth.
