Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.- A middle innings barrage of runs was too much for the Delmarva Shorebirds to overcome on Saturday night as they fell to the Augusta GreenJackets 8-2 on Saturday night at SRP Park.
The win clinches the series for the GreenJackets (11-9), who took four of the first five games in the six game set from the Shorebirds (6-14).
Delmarva managed to strike first for the second straight night, pushing a run across in the first inning. Luis Valdez singled on the game's first pitch then stole second and advanced to third when the throw to second was wild. Noelberth Romero then drove him in with a sacrifice fly to put Delmarva ahead 1-0.
Augusta answered back immediately in the bottom of the first. Caleb Durbin led off the home half of the first with a walk and then stole second before scoring on a Geraldo Quintero single to tie the game. After Stephen Paolini hit into a fielder's choice to replace Quintero at first, Rusber Estrada doubled to left-center, scoring Paolini and vaulting Augusta ahead 2-1.
The GreenJackets expanded their lead in the middle frames. In the fourth, a groundball double-play allowed a run to score while Estrada picked up his second RBI double of the night in the fifth to make it 4-1.
Augusta exploded for four in the sixth. After back-to-back singles to start the inning, Connor Blair doubled home a run before Caleb Durbin did him one better with a double that plated two. Durbin then took third on a wild pitch before scoring on fielder's interference to make it 8-1.
Delmarva got one back in the eighth on an Isaac Bellony bases loaded walk, but couldn't muster anything else down the stretch, losing 8-2.
Miguel Pena (1-0) collected the win out of the bullpen for Augusta. Pena tossed two scoreless innings without allowing a hit while walking one and striking out three.
Moisés Chace (0-1) suffered the loss for Delmarva. Chace lasted three frames, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks, striking out five.
The Shorebirds wrap up their series against the GreenJackets on Sunday, May 1 at SRP Park. Shane Davis (0-1, 3.68) gets the start for Delmarva against Royber Salinas (0-1, 1.45) for Augusta. First pitch is slated for 1:35 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 1:20 p.m. on theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
