Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds fell victim to a late Salem comeback bid, dropping a 5-4 heartbreaker on Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
With the loss, the Shorebirds (24-14) have dropped three of their last four and the Red Sox (21-18) jump back within three games of the top spot in the division.
Much like Thursday night, the home team got the scoring started in the second inning. A leadoff walk put Dylan Harris on base and Cristopher Cespedes doubled to advance Harris to third. Ramon Rodriguez cleared the bases with a single to left, driving in both baserunners. Two outs later, Janvrin earned a free pass to load the bases and Gunnar Henderson followed suit to walk in the third run of the night. Andrew Martinez scored on a fielder's choice, but Janvrin was thrown out going home.
The 4-0 lead from the second stuck with Delmarva all the way through to the seventh. Eduardo Lopez and Jake MacKenzie singled while Nick Yorke walked to load the bases for Gilberto Jimenez with two outs. Jimenez smacked a bases-clearing double to left to drive in three runs and bring the Sox within one, 4-3.
The scoring stayed quiet until the top of the ninth, when Salem erupted again. Mackenzie singled again with one out and advanced to second on a Yorke groundout. Jimenez then struck again, singling to center and tying the game at 4-4. Matthew Lugo reached on an error, and singles from Stephen Scott and Ceddanne Rafaela drove in Jimenez for the game-winning run.
Kyle Martin (2-1) was handed the loss for Delmarva, surrendering three hits and one unearned run in 0.2 innings of work.
Brandon Walter (1-1) earned the victory for the Sox after tossing three hitless innings and sitting five Shorebirds down on strikes.
Ignacio Feliz pitched a solid four innings as the starter, allowing four hits and one walk while fanning seven Salem batters, but did not factor into the decision.
Each pitching staff collected 14 strikeouts in the contest. Cespedes and Rodriguez provided the only hits of the night for the 'Birds, but Delmarva hitters were walked six times in the game.
The Shorebirds start the fight to earn a series split on Saturday, June 19 at Perdue Stadium. Shane Davis (2-1, 4.88) takes the ball to start for Delmarva, going toe-to-toe with Aldo Ramirez (1-1, 2.03). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on MiLB.TV and Fox Sports 960 AM with Sam Jellinek and Nick Lewis on the call.
