Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Mississippi Braves (16-15) used three big innings to top the Biloxi Shuckers (12-19) 10-6 in their series opener on Tuesday night at MGM Park.
Biloxi jumped out to a lead in the home half of the first inning. Tyler Friis led off with a double and came in to score on a single up the middle by Payton Henry, giving the Shuckers a 1-0 lead.
The M-Braves responded with four runs in the top of the second inning off RHP Noah Zavolas (L, 2-2) on an RBI single from Greyson Jenista and a two-run homer by Drew Lugbauer, his third of the year, to put Mississippi up 3-1. An RBI single from Braden Shewmake capped the scoring for the M-Braves.
The Shuckers pulled within two in the bottom of the third thanks to the combination of Friis and Henry again. Friis singled to start the frame and advanced to second on a wild pitch from RHP Hayden Deal. Henry then roped a single off the right-field wall, sending Friis home to make it 4-2 M-Braves.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Mississippi added on another three runs in the top of the fifth thanks to home runs by Shea Langaliers and Wendell Rijo, extending the M-Braves advantage to 7-2. Mississippi would add on another three runs in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly and a pair of Shuckers errors, pushing ahead 10-2.
Biloxi made a late push in the bottom of the eighth inning. Friis worked a one-out walk to reach base for a fourth time, bringing up Brice Turang. Needing a hit to extend his Double-A leading 11 game hitting streak, Turang lofted a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for a home run, his second of the season, to make it 10-5. Alexander Palma followed with a solo blast two batters later, but the final four Shuckers batters went in order to end the game.
The Shuckers continue their six-game series against the M-Braves on Wednesday night at MGM Park. LHP Leo Crawford (1-2, 9.33) takes the mound opposite M-Braves' RHP Odalvi Javier (2-0, 1.31) for a 6:35 pm first pitch. The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9, online here or on the MiLB App.
