Billings Scores Early to End Voyagers Win Streak

Great Falls, MT - The Voyagers surrendered three first-inning runs and never climbed out of that hole in a 7-2 loss to Billings Monday night at Centene Stadium. Great Falls (3-1, 18-23) had its four game winning streak stopped, and dropped to 5-7 against Billings in the season series. The Mustangs (3-1, 18-24) won their second straight and improved to 9-13 on the road.

The first three batters of the game reached base to produce the first three runs for Billings. Quin Cotton led off the game with a double lined into the left field corner. T.J. Hopkins brought Cotton home with an RBI single to center. James Free made it 3-0 with a two-run home run opposite way to right for his second of the season. Great Falls scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first. Leading off, Caberea Weaver made it all the way to third on a dropped fly ball to right. The throw into to second went behind the base and up the left side. Weaver then tagged and scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center from Joshua Rivera.

Both teams plated runs in the fourth. Eric Yang reached base with a lead-off double to left-center. With one out, Victor Ruiz singled to center. Both runners scored on a triple to right by Jonathan Willems and it was 5-1 Mustangs. The Voyagers fourth-inning run came on a Luis Mieses' solo home run crushed deep to right near the line. His fourth dinger of the season traveled 420 feet with an exit velocity of 108.

Billings scored single runs in the fifth and the seventh innings for the game's final margin. Eric Yang drove in a run in the fifth with a double into the left field corner. The seventh inning tally scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Yang as well after a walk and a pair of singles.

The Mustangs outhit the Voyagers 11-to-6. Four Billings' batters posted multi-hit games. Jonathan Willems led the way with three hits and two RBIs. James Free collected two hits with two RBIs and two runs. Luis Mieses went 2-for-4 with the homer and a double for Great Falls.

Frainger Aranguren earned the win on the mound in relief. Aranguren (3-1) worked three scoreless innings and gave up just two hits with two strikeouts. Dan Metzdorf took the loss. Metzdorf pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits (HR) with five strikeouts. Great Falls continues its seven-day home stand with the second of three against Billings Tuesday night.
