Bill Peters Statement
August 30, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Lethbridge Hurricanes News Release
Lethbridge, AB - After a separation of four years from the sport, former NHL hockey coach Bill Peters returns as the new head coach of the Lethbridge Hurricanes hockey club for the 2023-2024 season. The decision to accept a multi-year contract with the Hurricanes comes after thorough reflection, personal growth, and extensive discussions with the WHL and Lethbridge Hurricanes leadership.
Peters resigned as Head Coach of the NHL's Calgary Flames on November 29, 2019, after it became public he had committed an act of anti-black racism involving Akim Aliu, a former player of Peters'. The incident occurred when Peters was Head Coach of the AHL's Rockford IceHogs during the 2009-10 season.
Bill Peters expressed deep regret for his past words and behaviours, stating, "I want to sincerely apologize for the hurt and disappointment I caused to Akim, the hockey and the racialized community with my hurtful language. My actions were not reflective of the values and knowledge I hold now. I have spent the past four years reflecting on and understanding the profound impact of my inappropriate language and actions. I am committed to making amends and contributing positively to the hockey community I care deeply about."
Having voluntarily completed a 12-month intensive personal program with Shades of Humanity, a national diversity and inclusion consultancy, Bill Peters received meaningful education to understand race, privilege, power, bias and the importance of fostering a culture of respect, inclusion, and diversity within the world of sports.
"I am dedicated to continuing this journey of learning about equity, the experiences of racialized communities and how my mistakes can serve as teachable moments for me, the sport of hockey and the community of Lethbridge, where I am humbled to return," said Peters.
Bill Peters will continue participating in anti-racism coaching, equity training, and further educational initiatives prescribed by Shades of Humanity Consulting and adhere to the personal conduct regulations and policies, including the WHL Diversity and Inclusion Policy, which speaks directly to anti-racism.
