Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest to the Ocean State Waves, 3-1, at Recreation Field on Wednesday night.

With the loss, Vermont falls to 2-2 on the summer, while Ocean State improves to 2-2.

Waves' senior Tim Lynch (Jupiter, Fla. / Southern Mississippi) had the hit of the game, connecting on a two out two-run homerun in the third inning to give Ocean State a 2-0 lead, one the team would not surrender.

Ocean State junior starting pitcher Blaise Whitman (Salisbury, Mass. / Rhode Island) hurled five innings of scoreless ball, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out five. He earned the win to move to 1-0 on the summer.

For the Waves, senior reliever Corey Randall (Mocksville, N.C. / UNC-Asheville) and junior Richard Lovelady (Hinesville, Ga. / East Georgia State) pitched two and two-thirds innings to bridge the gap to closer, junior David Gerber (Naperville, Ill. / Creighton), who earned his second save of the season. Gerber dealt an inning and one-third and allowed no runs on one hit and struck out two.

Senior starter Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt. / Norwich) threw three and one-third innings for Vermont and allowed two earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out two. Whaley dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

Each team managed just five hits. For Vermont, senior second baseman Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) compiled three of the team's five hits. Roulis singled twice and doubled in his first three plate appearances, extending his hit streak to eight consecutive at bats and four straight games. He leads the league in hitting with a .684 batting average (13-for-19).

The Mountaineers scored their lone run of the game in the eighth. Junior centerfielder Mike Bozarth (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis) drew a two out walk and scored from first when sophomore shortstop Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) cranked a double to left-center field. Bozarth's run cut The Waves' lead to 2-1.

Ocean State added an insurance run in the ninth to come away with the 3-1 victory.

The Mountaineers will next play on Friday, June 12, when they travel to Connecticut for a matchup with the Mystic Schooners. The opening pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Fitch High School. The meeting will mark the first of a two-game road trip for Vermont. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
