Keene Swamp Bats Drop Another in Blowout 8-0

June 10, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The Swamp Bats took the long trip to Newport, Rhode Island to play the Newport Gulls in hopes of securing their first win of the season. The Gulls had other plans and jumped ahead of the Swamp Bats in the first inning and never looked back.

It was a rough night at the ballpark for Keene as it seemed as though no bounces would go their way and the Gulls were on their game as Newport improved to 3-2 on the season.

Newport added to their 1-0 lead after the first inning in the third with RBI's from right fielder Cooper Elliott and first baseman Max Beermann giving them a 3-0 lead heading to the fourth inning.

The game broke open in the fourth and fifth innings where the Gulls tacked on five more runs, including three runs in three consecutive innings by center fielder Joven Afenir. Afenir finished the game 5 for 5 with 3 runs scored and a double on the day and the score heading to the sixth inning was 8-0 for the Gulls over the Swamp Bats.

The score would remain at 8-0 for the remainder of the game as Keene could only manage 7 hits through the nine innings. Keene's defense was not helped behind the pitching staff as they recorded 4 errors including one at short stop by Dan Cellucci, which was his fourth error on the young season.

Keene falls to 0-5 and will play Thursday night at Alumni Field in Keene, against the New Bedford Bay Sox, with first pitch at 6:30.
