Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The home run ball was the Stockton Ports' weapon of choice in snapping a four-game losing streak on Friday night at Banner Island Ballpark. The Ports got a pair of three-run homers as well as a solo blast in a 10-3 win over the San Jose Giants in the opener of a three-game series.

The Ports scored the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first. With runners at the corners and one out, Luke Persico delivered a sacrifice fly to center that gave Stockton a 1-0 lead. San Jose was quick to tie it in the second on a solo homer hit by Dillon Dobson down the right field line. It was the first Cal-League run allowed by Ports starter Wyatt Marks.

Stockton took the lead back in the third inning in a big way. Giants starter John Gavin (0-2) issued back-to-back two-out walks, followed by a three-run homer hit by Edwin Diaz that gave the Ports a 4-1 lead. After Marks escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth with the help of a double-play ball, Santiago Chavez supplied a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth to take it to a 5-1 Stockton advantage. It was the final run allowed by Gavin, who suffered the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits while walking three and striking out three.

Marks would work into the fifth inning but not see the end of it. After recording a strikeout to open the frame, Marks gave up back-to-back singles and then issued a walk that loaded the bases for Heath Quinn, who hit a two-run single to left to make it 5-3 and chase Marks from the contest. Andrew Tomasovich (2-1) took over from the bullpen with runners at the corners and one out and got a pop-fly to the infield and a fly ball to left to escape further trouble.

Marks did not factor into the decision, going 4 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on five hits while matching a career-high with five walks and striking out six. Tomasovich would go on to pitch 1 2/3 innings and earn the victory.

Peter Lannoo took over for San Jose in the fifth and gave up back-to-back one-out doubles to Viosergy Rosa and Persico with Persico driving in Rosa to make it 6-3. Two batters later, Brett Siddall added an RBI single to right to make it a 7-3 advantage. Lannoo allowed two runs on three hits in his lone inning.

Stockton salted the game away in the sixth facing Franklin Van Gurp. With two on and one out, Rosa came up and blasted a three-run homer to left to balloon the lead to 10-3. It was Rosa's second home run in as many games.

Sam Sheehan took over for Stockton in the seventh and escaped a bases-loaded jam with two outs in his lone inning. Trey Cochran-Gill worked two scoreless frames beginning in the eighth to close out the contest for the Ports.

The Ports and Giants play the second game of their three-game series on Saturday night at Banner Island Ballpark. In a battle of southpaws, Zack Erwin (8-8, 5.16 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Domenic Mazza (3-3, 4.19 ERA) for San Jose. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
