Big Sixth Leads to Slammers 7-2 Win

Joliet, IL- A seven-run sixth inning propels the Joliet Slammers (24-34) to a 7-2 win over the Windy City ThunderBolts (21-36) 0n Friday night.

The opposing lefty pitchers, Michael Carden for Joliet and Jake Fisher for Windy City, cruised through the first three innings. CF Coco Johnson reached and was moved over to third on a 2B Michael Torres double in the third. LF Ryan Deitrich was intentionally walked with one out to load the bases. The threat would be stopped with two straight lineouts to right field off the bats of RF Max White and 3B Jacob Tanis.

Michael Carden maneuvered out of trouble in the top of the fifth inning as well. Lead-off batter Coco Johnson singled and stole second. Carden forced 2B Michael Torres into a groundout and got the dangerous 1B Austin Gallagher to fly out to center. With two down and a runner on second, Carden struck out the cleanup batter Ryan Deitrich to get out of the inning.

As the Slammers struggled to gain momentum at the plate, the ThunderBolts struck in the sixth. RF Max White doubled to lead off. 3B Jacob Tanis laid down a bunt move him over. On the play, Carden's throw to first went into right field, allowing White to come around and score. He would later score on a two-out double by catcher Tyler Clark, putting the ThunderBolts up 2-0 after the top of the sixth.

The Slammers bats came alive in the sixth inning against Fisher. LF Phil Bates led off with a single and moved to second on a base-knock by Roberts. A double by SS Alfredo Rodriguez drove in Bates before Garza knocked in a pair with a single. The Slammers grabbed the 3-2 lead with the hit. With Fisher now out of the game and reliever Chris DeBoo in Carlos Lopez doubled. With runners at second and third, Jack Cleary singled to score a pair and put the Slammers up 5-2 on six straight hits. Bates would later single to drive in DH Hunter Ridge and catcher Jack Cleary, putting the Slammers up 7-2 and breaking the game open.

Windy city had a chance to cut into the lead in the eighth. RF Max White singled as did the SS Ransom LaLonde to set up runners at the corners with one out. Slammers' right hander Kevin McNorton induced the ground ball from DH Alex Chittenden that turned two and ended the Thunderbolts' threat.

Kevin McNorton would continue his relief in the ninth and wrap up a five run victory for the Slammers. McNorton (4-2) earned the win after Carden allowed just two runs in 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Our Merchants and manufacturers Bank Player of the Game was Phil Bates. He went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs driven in while scoring once. Joliet will host Windy City for game two on Saturday. Notes: Seven straight Slammers reached in the sixth inning...Phil Bates had two hits in the frame...Alfredo Rodriguez has a six-game hitting streak and has driven in a run in each of the Slammers last three games...For the second straight start, Michael Carden pitched five innings without giving up an earned run...With their game against the Windy City ThunderBolts in the books, the Slammers have now played against every team at least once.
