Big Performances from Lillie and Rojas Highlights a Thursday Shutout Victory

SAN ANTONIO - Following Wednesday night's hit parade, the two clubs participated in a pitcher's duel through most of Thursday night's ballgame. After scoring in the first inning, the Missions held a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning. The offense came alive and scored five runs in the eighth inning capitalized by an Edwin Rojas two-run home run. The Missions earned their fifth shutout victory of the season with a final score of 6-0.
Deyni Olivero was the starting pitcher for the Amarillo Sod Poodles. After last night's high scoring game, the Missions offense gained an early lead in the top of the first inning. Connor Hollis started off the game with a double. Thomas Milone followed that up with an RBI double. The Missions had a 1-0 lead just two batters into the game.
San Antonio had another scoring opportunity in the top of the second inning. With one out in the inning, Ripken Reyes hit a double and Edwin Rojas was hit by a pitch. After recording the second out of the inning, a passed ball from catcher Juan Centeno allowed both runners to advance. Thomas Milone struck out swinging to leave both runners stranded.
Ryan Lillie was the starting pitcher for the San Antonio Missions. The right-hander put together one of his strongest outings of the season. Lillie pitched five shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out two batters.
Amarillo had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third inning. Andy Yerzy recorded the first hit of the game when he doubled to right field. Lillie was able to retire the next two batters to leave Yerzy stranded.
San Antonio had another chance to improve their lead in the top of the fourth inning. After being reinstated from the Injured List prior to the game, Juan Fernandez hit a one-out double. He advanced to third base after Reyes grounded out. Fernandez was left stranded at third base after Rojas flew out.
Amarillo left two runners stranded in the bottom of the fourth inning. Triston English began the inning with a base hit. After a fly out and a strike out, Blaze Alexander recorded a base hit. Lillie induced a ground ball out to end the scoring threat and keep the game 1-0 in the Missions favor.
The Missions squandered another scoring opportunity in the top of the seventh inning. With Josh Green on the mound, he recorded the first two batters he faced before allowing a double to Rojas. Hollis drew a walk to advance Rojas into scoring position. Thomas Milone struck out to leave both runners on base.
Olivero recovered from the first inning to record a quality start for Amarillo. He lasted six innings while allowing one earned run on four hits. He also struck out three batters while issuing one walk.
Henry Henry came on to pitch for the Missions in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a scoreless inning, he had to pitch out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning. After recording the first two outs of the inning, he allowed a double to Roby Enriquez. Henry was replaced by Fred Schlichtholz. The southpaw left the runner stranded after recording a ground out.
San Antonio opened things up in the top of the eighth inning by scoring five runs on six hits. Domingo Leyba started off the inning with a double and then advanced to third base on a fielding error. After a ground out, Webster Rivas drove in Leyba with a base hit to center field. Later in the inning, Rivas scored on a ground out from Fernandez. Reyes drove in a run with a single to center field. Green was replaced by Yorvin Pantoja. On a 1-2 count, Rojas hit his first career Double-A home run. His two-run homer made it a 6-0 Missions lead.
Schlichtholz had to pitch out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs in the inning, Barrosa and English hit back-to-back singles. The southpaw struck out Leandro Cedeno to keep the shutout alive.

With the win, San Antonio improves to 44-38 (overall), 6-9 (2nd half) on the season

The San Antonio Missions will continue their six-game series with the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Friday, July 15th. Left-hander Ben Krauth (0-1, 12.00) is scheduled to pitch for the Missions. Right-hander Slade Cecconi (5-3, 4.31) is scheduled to pitch for the Sod Poodles. First pitch is expected at 7:05 p.m. from Hodgetown.
