FRISCO, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced on Thursday that three RoughRiders players won June honors for the Rangers Minor League system. Kellen Strahm captured Player of the Month honors while Owen White was named the Pitcher of the Month and Jonathan Ornelas the Defender of the Month.
Strahm, who is riding a 28-game on-base streak as of July 13th, started slowly, but burst onto the scene in the middle of May. Over his 21 June games, Strahm hit .347/.434/.528 with four doubles, three home runs, seven RBIs, 14 runs and 11 walks. After beginning his season batting just .136/.329/.220 through May 13th, he has hit .313/.421/.403 in his last 41 games since. The Eugene, Oregon native was drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 draft out of San Jose State.
White made just one start with the RoughRiders in June after being promoted to Frisco from High-A Hickory. Combined over four starts, he went 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA while striking out 35 to five walks over 24.1 innings. As of July 13th, White is 9-2 with a 3.59 ERA with 104 strikeouts in his 80.1 innings. White was drafted in the second round of the 2018 draft by the Rangers out of the North Carolina high school ranks. White is ranked as the No. 6 prospect in the Rangers system and the No. 94 prospect in baseball by MLB.com.
Ornelas took over full-time at shortstop for the RoughRiders after Ezequiel Duran (May's Player of the Month) was promoted directly to the Rangers from Frisco on June 4th. All 23 of Ornelas' games were at shortstop, where he leads all RoughRiders players in assists this season. In June, Ornelas had a .959 fielding percentage.
