Missions Plate 14 Runs on 18 Hits During Wednesday Night Victory

SAN ANTONIO - Wednesday night saw the San Antonio Missions and Amarillo Sod Poodles combine to score 26 runs and collect 31 hits. After giving up an 11-3 lead, the Missions and Sod Poodles had to sit through a power outage at the stadium. The pause in action helped the Missions as they scored twice in the eighth inning on their way to a 14-12 victory.
Reggie Lawson was the starting pitcher for the Missions. He struggled with his control in the bottom of the first inning and had to pitch out of a jam. He failed to throw a strike with his first 10 pitches of the game. With the first two runners on base, Lawson struck out the next batter and recorded a fly out for the first two outs of the inning. The right hander then walked a third batter to load the bases. Lawson struck out Tim Tawa to leave the bases loaded.
Blake Walston was the starting pitcher for the Sod Poodles. After a scoreless first inning, the Missions had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second inning. Tirso Ornelas hit a one-out single to right field. After striking out the next batter, the southpaw issued a walk to Chandler Seagle. With two on and two outs, Edwin Rojas struck out looking to end the inning.
Amarillo took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. After striking out the first two batters of the inning, Lawson allowed a double to Nick Dalesandro. Jorge Barrosa drove him in with a single to left field. On the play, Barrosa was able to advance to third base on a throwing error from Tirso Ornelas. After issuing a walk to Triston English, Lawson recorded a line out to end the inning. The Missions trailed 1-0.
That lead did not last long as San Antonio plated five runs in the top of the third inning. Connor Hollis started off the inning with a double. He advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Ripken Reyes. Hollis scored the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Domingo Leyba. The Missions then loaded the bases after back-to-back singles from Yorman Rodriguez and Webster Rivas, and a walk to Ornelas. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kelvin Melean left the yard for a grand slam. His first hit since joining the Missions gave the club a 5-1 lead.
The Sod Poodles cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the third inning. Eduardo Diaz started off the inning by drawing a walk. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Blaze Alexander connected a two-run home run. His ninth long ball of the season made it a 5-3 Missions lead.
San Antonio's offense made it back-to-back five-run innings in the top of the fourth inning. With one out in the inning, Hollis and Reyes hit back-to-back singles. Hollis came in to score on an RBI double from Leyba. Rodriguez drove in Reyes with a single to left field. Rivas drove in Rodriguez with a double into left-center field. That was the end for Walston as he was replaced by Liu Fuenmayor. The first pitch from the southpaw was a wild pitch which allowed Rodriguez to come in to score. Lastly, Rivas came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ornelas. The Missions improved their lead to 10-3.
The Missions added another run in the top of the fifth inning. Facing Junior Garcia, he allowed back-to-back walks to Hollis and Reyes after retiring the first batter of the inning. After the southpaw recorded the second out of the inning, he allowed an RBI single to Rodriguez to make it an 11-3 advantage.
Amarillo began their comeback attempt in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Sod Poodles plated four runs on two hits. Facing Moises Lugo, Juan Centeno started off the inning with a base hit. Ti'Quan Forbes reached base on a fielder's choice to place two runners on base. Lugo loaded the bases after walking Dalesandro. Osvaldo Hernandez replaced Lugo on the mound. Amarillo cleared the bases with a double from Barrosa. After recording the first out of the inning, the fourth run for Amarillo scored on a ground out from Enriquez. Amarillo cut the lead to 11-7.
San Antonio added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Facing Jake Rice, Edwin Rojas legged out a triple to begin the inning. Following a strikeout, Reyes drove in Rojas with a sacrifice fly. The Missions improved their lead to 12-7.
Amarillo accomplished their comeback and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Sod Poodles plated five runs on seven hits. Facing Lake Bachar, Alexander hit a lead-off home run. Amarillo then loaded the bases after collecting three base hits. Tim Tawa came around to score after Barrosa grounded into a force out. English drove in two runs with a single to left field. After allowing another base hit, Bachar was replaced by Jose Quezada. The fifth and final run of the inning scored on a single from Diaz. Amarillo tied the game at 12-12.
It was an interesting eighth inning for the Missions and Sod Poodles. Mack Lemieux came on to pitch and allowed singles to Rodriguez and Ornelas. Prior to the Ornelas base hit, Rivas grounded into a force out with Rodriguez out at second base. After a fly out from Melean, the game came to a halt after a power outage occurred at the stadium. Once play resumed, Seagle reached base on a fielding error and Rivas scored the go-ahead run. Ornelas came around to score on an infield single from Rojas. The Missions regained the lead, 14-12.
Amarillo had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. With Quezada still on the mound, Barrosa began the inning with a base hit. After recording the first out, Quezada allowed a single to Enriquez. With the winning run at the plate, Diaz grounded into a double play to end the ballgame.

With the win, San Antonio improves to 43-38 (overall), 5-9 (2nd half) on the season

Right-hander Deyni Olivero (0-6, 7.08) is scheduled to pitch for the Sod Poodles. First pitch is expected at 7:05 p.m. from Hodgetown.
