Lexington County Blowfish News Release
The Florence RedWolves scored four runs in the top of the ninth to put away the Columbia Blowfish, 6-1, at Capital City Stadium on Friday night. The loss is the seventh straight for the Blowfish (4-12), who have now lost 11 of their last 12 game.
Pat Ludwig (0-2) took the loss for Columbia. He threw six solid innings, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out five. Hunter Adkins (2-1) was just a little better for Florence (9-7) as he also went six innings, allowing just one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven.
Brett Kauten doubled home Tony Micklon in the second inning and Michael Wilson added an RBI groundout in the fourth to give Florence a 2-0 edge.
The Blowfish got their lone run in the bottom of the fifth. With Carlos Santana at third, a wild pitch bounced off the backstop and right back to catcher Jacob German. The lucky bounce caught Santana in no mans land, but the throw to third was wild, and Santana was able to trot across the plate to make it a one run game.
The Blowfish entered the final inning down by just a run, but that's when things got out of hand. A sacrifice fly by Wilson brought home a run. Newly acquired left fielder Greg Harrison tried to get the runner at home, but the throw bounced away from Nick Abrahamson, allowing another run to cross the plate. The late mishap made it 12 straight games the Blowfish have committed an error, and 13 of 15 games in which the Fish have allowed an unearned run. Blake Barber then continued to pour it on as he smashed a two-run home run off Gabe Grammer to make it a four run final.
Jake Long made another quality appearance out of the bullpen for the Blowfish. Making his second appearance since joining the team Monday, Long threw 2.2 innings allowing an earned run on four hits. Once again the RedWolves got a slightly better effort, as their bullpen held Columbia without a hit through the final three innings.
Zach Smith failed to reach base in a game for the first time this season, as he went 0-4 with a strikeout. The streak ends at 15 games.
Smith and the Blowfish look to rebound tomorrow night, when they host Fayetteville. It will be the third time the teams face each other this week and the second time at Capital City Stadium. The SwampDogs won both games of a home-and-home series earlier this week.
