Modesto Nuts News Release

BAKERSFIELD, CA (July 30th, 2013) -- Trailing 4-2 in the fifth inning, Bakersfield rallied for four runs against Nuts starter Dan Winkler, and held on the rest of the way for an 8-6 win over Modesto on Tuesday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

Despite the loss, the Nuts (21-19, 53-57) were able to remain a half game back of the Giants for first place in the second-half North Division standings.

After both teams went scoreless through the first two innings, Niko Gallego got the Nuts on the board with an RBI single against Blaze starter Shane Dyer. Brian Humphries also drove in a run with two outs to make it a two run inning. Tyler Massey doubled and scored in the fourth after Dyer uncorked a pair of wild pitches to make it 3-0.

Winkler cruised through the first three frames, allowing just two hits and striking out five before running into trouble in the fourth. Steve Selsky got the Blaze on the board with a solo home run, and two batters later Kyle Waldrop also homered to make it 3-2.

Harold Riggins led off the fifth with a solo home run of his own to put Modesto back ahead by two. It was his 17th of the season.

Winkler (12-5), who had made it through five innings in each of his first 21 starts this season, was unable to escape the fifth. With a man at third and two outs, Juan Silverio singled home a run to make it 4-3, and following a walk, Winkler gave up a go-ahead 3-run homer to Juan Duran to end his night.

He was charged for a season-high six earned runs on seven hits, including three home runs.

Modesto plated single runs in the seventh and eighth against Jimmy Moran, but Bakersfield got two runs of their own against Patrick Johnson in the bottom of the seventh.

Pat Doyle struck out a pair in a scoreless ninth to pick up his eighth save of the year.

The Nuts wrap a six-game road trip on Wednesday night with a rubber-match set at Sam Lynn Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:30 p.m.
