Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Blair Walters threw four solid innings in relief of Tommy Shirley and the JetHawks beat the Lake Elsinore Storm, 10-4, on Tuesday night at The Hangar.
Shirley, who had retired the first six batters he faced, left the game with no outs in the second inning after experiencing discomfort in this arm. Walters (6-1) came in and picked up where he left off, starting his night with three scoreless innings.
The two lefties had plenty of run support to work with thanks in large part of Matt Duffy and Brandon Meredith. Duffy hit a two-run homer, his team-leading 17th of the season, to get the scoring started in the second inning. It was the first home run that Storm starter Justin Hancock (2-4) had allowed between the Midwest League and Cal League this season.
Meredith later doubled in the inning to start a 4-for-4 night and eventually came around to score. Lancaster put up four in the second before Meredith helped add three in the third.
Duffy led off the third inning with a double and scored on a Chris Epps single. Meredith followed with his first of two home runs in the game. Meredith later hit a solo home run in the seventh inning to give him his second multi-homer game of the season. The outfielder fell a triple shy of the cycle and drove in three runs and scored three runs.
Tyler Heineman had a solid offensive night, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. As a team, the JetHawks totaled six doubles to tie a season-high.
Walters ended up striking out five and allowing two runs on two hits over his four innings of relief. Cameron Lamb and Tyson Perez each allowed a run in relief appearances as well.
The JetHawks (24-15, 63-46) take on the Storm (18-20, 46-62) in the second game of the three game series on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Hangar. Aaron West (7-7, 5.27) will take the mound for the JetHawks.
