Normal, Ill. - The Florence Freedom, presented by Titan Mechanical Solutions, scored nine runs in the second inning to support a stellar start from Davis Adkins in a 10-2 win over the Normal CornBelters.

Already leading 1-0 after a bases-loaded walk in the first inning, Florence sent 12 to the plate, drew four walks, and knocked around five hits in a nine-run second. After a pair of walks to lead off the inning, Taylor Oldham put the Freedom up 3-0 with a one-out, two-RBI double to left-center. With two away in the inning, Andrew Godbold delivered an RBI base hit through the left side, scoring Oldham. A passed ball plated Godbold and two more walks set the stage for Garrett Vail, who launched a three-run home run to left field, breaking the game open to an 8-0 Freedom advantage. Jordan Brower followed with a double and then Travis Weaver sneaked one over the fence in left-center for a two-run shot to put Florence on top 10-0.

Adkins took the reigns from there, striking out a career-high 10 batters, while allowing just two solo home runs and five total hits in seven innings. The defense helped out with a couple of great plays. In the first, Santiago Churino looked to score on a double from Aaron Dudley, but a Florence relay, Godbold to Brower to Vail, cut down the run at the plate. Then in the fifth inning, Oldham laid out to snag a hot shot and threw a two-hopper to first from his knees in time.

Jeremy Hutchison and Tanner Kiest both pitched shutout innings out of the Freedom bullpen in the victory.

Vail led the team in hits (two) and RBIs (three), while Brower also had a multi-hit game with two runs scored. Weaver and Oldham both finished with a hit, two runs, and two RBIs.

The Freedom look for their fourth straight win tomorrow in game two against the CornBelters. Florence will send Jordan Kraus (3-4, 3.70 ERA with Lake Erie) to the hill for his first start in a Freedom uniform. He will face Horatio Acosta (4-2, 3.09 ERA) in a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
