Berkshire Black Bears News Release

Elmira second baseman, Dennis Abreu hit an RBI double to the left-center field gap, which allowed Cleatus Davidson to score the first run of this afternoon game at Wahconah Park. The Black Bears got back to even quickly in the first inning when Pete Paciorek hit an RBI single to right field, allowing P.J Johnston to score from second base. In the third inning, Ryan Jones hit an RBI single giving the Black Bears a 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, P.J Johnston drove a line drive over the head of Elmira's right fielder, Scott Hunter, scoring Kevin Forbes from first. The hit was Johnston's first triple of the 2003 season, making the score 3-1. Mark Burnett followed with an RBI single, which made the Black Bears lead 4-1 as Johnston scored from third. On the next ball in play, Pete Paciorek crushed a fastball over the center fielder Ryan Webb, scoring Burnett all the way from first to make it 5-1. In the fifth inning Kevin Forbes gave the Black Bears a five-run cushion by smashing an RBI single with Brady Williams on second base. Andy Larned, who caught today in order to give Manny Crespo a rest, hit an RBI double, as the Black Bear's potent offense opened up a 7-1 advantage. Elmira closed to 7-3 in the 8th inning when left fielder Mike Valdes hit a two-run triple, but it was not enough to catch the Black Bears.

The Black Bears starting pitcher, Dan Henderson shut out the Elmira offense, giving up four hits and striking out two over five innings for his first win of the year. Geronimo Mendoza gave up nine hits and seven runs, over four and two thirds innings for the loss, falling to (3-4). The Black Bears, who are now one win away from the .500 mark, travel to North Shore Tuesday for a three game series with the Spirit.
