Asheville Tourists News Release

COLUMBIA--For the second day in a row, the Asheville Tourists failed to score a run in the first nine innings of a game. Unfortunately, Asheville was not able to reach extra-innings on Wednesday morning as the Tim Tebow led Columbia Fireflies defeated the Tourists 5-0.

In the top of the second, Brandon Gold issued a lead-off walk followed by a single off the bat of Tebow. Columbia reeled off three runs in the frame thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ali Sanchez and a two-run double by Gene Cone.

The Fireflies tacked on another in the third when Michael Paez led off the inning with a Home Run to deep left. Columbia's final run scored in the sixth after Tebow tripled to right field and came home on a Jose Medina single. Tebow finished 3-for-4.

Asheville had more than a few chances to score but failed to cash in. The Tourists put runners at second and third with one out in the second inning; put a runner at third with one out in the third; and loaded the bases in the fifth. The Fireflies starting pitcher Merandy Gonzalez worked out of all three jams unscathed.

Gonzalez finished with 7.2 innings pitched and has not allowed a run in 28.1 innings pitched this season. The Fireflies right-hander is 4-0 in four starts. Asheville's starting pitcher, Gold, lasted just three innings and surrendered four runs.

The Tourists finished their road trip 4-3 and return home to take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Thursday night. The first pitch is slated for 7:05pm.
