LEADING OFF: West Virginia lost 3-1 to Charleston on Tuesday. Hoy Jun Park hit a solo home run in the top of the first off Power starter Luis Escobar. West Virginia tied the game in the third on a Carlos Munoz sac fly, but the RiverDogs plated the go-ahead run in the very next inning. In the eighth, Charleston added a run against the Power bullpen. West Virginia went 0-9 with runners in scoring position and left a season-high 11 men on base. Escobar suffered his first loss of the season despite nine strikeouts, falling to 2-1 in 2017. Trevor Lane earned the win with three and a third relief innings while Garrett Mundell worked the ninth for his first save.
PACE SETTER: After four starts, Luis Escobar has a Minor League-best 41 strikeouts over 22 and a third innings pitched. After four starts in 2016, Mitch Keller had 28 strikeouts over 21 innings. In 2013, Tyler Glasnow had recorded 16 strikeouts over 15 innings. Glasnow holds the single season record with 164 and Keller is third with 131 last year. Escobar's next start is set for Sunday at Rome, a team he struck out 12 times in his first start of the season.
DOWN BY ONE: After Monday's loss to Charleston, the Power are now 1-7 in one-run games this season. West Virginia has lost 11 times at home this month, including six games by one run. The Power lost 29 times at Appalachian Power Park over the course of the entire 2016 season.
LONG TIME GONE: Tuesday's game lasted three hours and eight minutes and is the longest nine inning game despite the two teams only combining for four runs. It was eight minutes longer than West Virginia's 19-run, 22-hit win over Hickory last Monday.
FREE RIDE: Power pitchers issued seven walks in Tuesday night's loss; the most by the club in a single game this season. Prior to last night, West Virginia had not walked more than five in one game.
LIGHTENING STRIKES: On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates recalled Dovydas Neverauskas from Triple-A Indianapolis. The right-hander from Lithuania made his Major League debut last night and became the 61st former Power player to reach the Major Leagues. Neverauskas was a starting pitcher for the Power in 2014 and at the outset of 2015 before being shifted to the bullpen. He is the first Lithuanian-born player to reach the Major Leagues.
DOG DAYS: The Power close their first series of the season against the Charleston RiverDogs this morning. Charleston holds a 46-34 all-time series lead entering the season match-up, including a 22-17 mark at Appalachian Power Park. Between today and May 31, West Virginia has 33 games, 26 of which are against Southern Division opponents and eight against the club from Charlie South.
AL VS. NL: West Virginia is 6-3 this season against clubs that are affiliated with American League teams and 2-9 vs. National League-affiliate clubs.
POWER POINTS: Dovydas Neverauskas is the fourth former Power player to reach the Majors this season... West Virginia is 0-2 this season when using a spot starter and 8-9 when a member of the rotation starts... Heading in to play on Monday, the Power and RiverDogs were the only teams in the league without a blown save this season.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh was tripped 1-0 by the Chicago Cubs at PNC Park. Gerrit Cole allowed one unearned run and took the loss... Indianapolis was rained out in Pawtucket...Altoona lost 7-3 at Erie. Kevin Newman hit his first home run of the season, but JT Brubaker suffered the loss... Bradenton committed three errors and lost 7-3 at Fort Myers.
PROMO PREVIEW: The Power host the Charleston RiverDogs on Wednesday, April 26, at 10:35 A.M. This marks the first of two Grand Slam School Days this season. The second will be held on Tuesday, May 16, with the RiverDogs as the opponent once again.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on The Jock 1300 & 1340 AM in the Kanawha Valley, online at wvpower.com and on the TuneIn Radio App. Adam Marco will call the action and will be joined by Steve Granado when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
