Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Edinburg, TX - The Edinburg Coyotes (11-18) scored four runs in the first and never looked back to avoid the sweep and beat the Harlingen WhiteWings (12-18) 9-5 tonight at Edinburg Stadium.

The Coyotes got to Alex Gett (1-5) right away as Angelo Fermin led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Gary Roche. Mayobanex Santana followed with a single to score Fermin and move Roche to third. Daryl Jones followed suit, with an RBI-single that moved Santana to third. Jones stole second. Eric Gonzalez then reached on an error which scored Santana. Patrick Gaylord made the first out with a deep fly ball to left field, which allowed Jones to move to third, from where he scored on an RBI-single by Logan Wood. Eddie Wilson struck out swinging and Alex Entrekin grounded out to end the inning after nine batters with the score 4-0.

Ryan Fox gave the WhiteWings one back right away against Eric Montoya (3-2) with his fifth home run of the season, leading off the second.

That would be it until the sixth. With one out, Entrekin singled. Fermin hit a grounder to second, but the flip to Amadeo Zazueta covering the bag was dropped. Roched followed with a bloop single on which Bub Bergstrom threw out Entrekin at third base for the second out. Santana and Jones followed with back-to-back RBI-singles to knock out Gett. Brandon Kling came in and gave up an RBI-single to Gonzalez to make it 7-1.

The WhiteWings came flying back in the seventh by sending eight men to the plate. Argelis Nunez led off with a walk. One out later, David Cardona walked and Carl Johnson singled to load the bases. Zazueta followed with a three-run double and then scored on an RBI-single by Bergstrom to make it 7-5.

The Coyotes got two back in the bottom of the seventh when Wood led off with a single, stole second, and scored when the attempted put-out throw in Wilson's ensuing sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away. Two outs later, Roche hit an RBI-single to make it 9-5.

Bric Steed tried to finish up the game in the ninth, but Johnson and Zazueta hit leadoff singles to force Julio Castro to come in. Castro retired all three hitters he faced to record save number four.

The WhiteWings welcome the Laredo Broncos to Harlingen Field for the first of three tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Bobby Darling (0-3) will face right-hander Santo Hernandez (4-1).
