Big Fifth Inning Sinks 'Cats in Game 1 of Road Trip

July 8, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

AUGUSTA, NJ - Following a successful 5-2 Independence Day homestand at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium against the Empire State Greys, Ottawa Titans, and Quebec Capitales, the Tri-City ValleyCats traveled to Skylands Stadium in Augusta, New Jersey on Friday to take on the rival Sussex County Miners. The two teams, who met 31 times last season, kicked off the second of just three 2022 three-game sets on a humid New Jersey night, marking the only time Tri-City would visit Sussex County in regular season play.

The 'Cats sent right-hander Olbis Parra to the mound. Parra would show off his ability to work out of the jam, allowing one run throughout his first four innings of work.

The Miners struck first, tallying one in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double by shortstop Errol Robinson. The 'Cats would claw back almost immediately, tallying one in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly to deep center field off of the bat of Jesus Lujano, scoring Pavin Parks.

Despite working out of trouble early on, Olbis Parra would not make it through the fifth frame of work on Friday night. A pair of RBI doubles, and an RBI triple tallied 4 for the Miners and chased Parra from the game with two outs.

Sidearmer Jake Dexter would prove to be a bright spot for the Tri-City ValleyCats working in relief of Parra. Dexter allowed just one baserunner in 3.1 innings of work out of the bullpen. The one baserunner, Sussex County outfielder Jawuan Harris, reached in the bottom of the sixth inning on an infield single, and would later be erased trying to steal third base. Dexter would strike two out and walk none in his best outing of the season to date.

FINAL | SUSSEX COUNTY (28-22) 5 TRI-CITY (26-23) 1

W: Dwayne Marshall (6-2)

L: Olbis Parra (2-3)

The Tri-City ValleyCats and Sussex County Miners are back at Skylands Stadium tomorrow night for game two of the three game weekend set before Tri-City heads to Pomona for a weekday matinee with the Boulders, before returning to "The Joe" for a two-game set with those same New York Boulders. The fun begins on Wednesday, July 13th with "I Love (Upstate) NY Night" featuring a bobblehead giveaway of Shenendehowa Graduate and 2021 World Series Champion Ian Anderson to the first 1,000 fans courtesy of American National Insurance.
