Otters Take Series Opener Versus the Y'alls
July 8, 2022 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - It took the Florence Y'alls until the eighth inning to score their first runs of the game, and when they did it was too little too late as the Evansville Otters defeated the Y'alls 4-2 Friday night at Bosse Field.
The loss is the eleventh in a row for Florence. In all but one of those losses, it was a one-run game at some point during the contest. That stayed true tonight when the Y'alls scored their first two runs in the eighth inning thanks to an RBI double each for Ray Zuberer III and Alberti Chavez to cut the deficit to 3-2. The two runs snapped a 17 1/3 inning scoreless stretch for the Y'alls going back to Wednesday night.
Evansville scored an insurance run in the bottom half on the inning after a couple passed balls. After about a 45-minute delay, the game was called official due to rain and severe thunderstorms which rolled in right as the Otters were warming up to take the field for the ninth inning.
Florence could get nothing going against Justin Watland, Evansville's starting pitcher who struck out eight in seven 1/3 innings. The reigning Frontier League Pitcher of the Week only allowed three hits. He allowed the Zuberer RBI double before departing in the eighth, and Jacob Bowles allowed that inherited runner to score. In his past three starts, Watland has pitched 23 1/3 innings with 29 strikeouts and just four earned runs and eight hits allowed.
Jeremy Ovalle takes the tough loss tonight in his debut with the Y'alls. The righty went the first five innings with only two earned runs and six strikeouts along the way. Evy Ruibal also made his season-debut with Florence and pitched a scoreless sixth inning with two strikeouts.
JR Davis drove in the only three eligible runs for the Otters, who scored single runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings. He now has seven runs batted in against the Y'alls this year, doing all his damage tonight without a hit.
The two teams will take the field again tomorrow, Saturday, July 9, at Bosse Field for the second game of this weekend series. Jonaiker Villalobos will try to end the season-long losing streak, opposed by Brett Adcock for Evansville.
