Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
YAKIMA, Wash. - The roster additions continue for the Yakima Valley Pippins, as the club announced the addition of right-handed pitchers Andrew Bernstein and Jordon Gonzalez.
"You've heard it a thousand times, but having quality arms on the mound is the essential piece to a great team," said Pippins' Manager Marcus McKimmy. "Both of these guys have a nice collection of pitches and attributes that will help the Pippins win games right away out of the gate. Coach [Bob] Wells helped produce one of the league's top ERA's last summer, and these guys are two great pieces to help us continue to get consistent outs on defense."
Bernstein is finishing his first year with Cal Poly. The native of Claremont, California has worked in 10 games this spring for the Mustangs, starting 7. In his 32 1/3 innings of work, his record sits at 3-3 and his ERA at 5.01.
"Andrew is a super worker who has thrown quality innings as a true freshman at a very good Cal Poly program as a right-handed pitcher," said McKimmy. "He features a solid 3-pitch mix arsenal with a fastball at 85-87 mph with hopes of being even better this summer, breaking ball is a solid average pitch with his best pitch being a wipe out change-up. His repertoire will allow him to be an instant impact in the starting rotation this June."
Gonzalez is a sophomore at the University of Pacific. He only saw action in four games for the Tigers, totaling 3 2/3 innings. That means his arm will be very fresh for his summer with the Pippins.
"Jordon hasn't thrown a ton of innings this spring, which means he will be fresh and motivated from day one in The Orchard," said McKimmy. "His velocity sits in the 88-91 range with the fastball and he also has an above-average changeup. I really expect him to make big improvements this summer as his coaches really brag about his physicality and work ethic in practice."
