Berkshire Black Bears News Release
The Black Bears celebrated the finale of the first half with the win on the beautiful evening at Wahconah Park tonight, beating Brockton 6-1.
After the five scoreless innings, the Rox scored the first run of the game when Brockton first baseman, Craig Lewis, hit an RBI ground out, bringing DH Nestor Smith home from third. In the bottom of the sixth, Chris Briones tied the game, tattooing a 0-1 pitch over the left-center fence, his third blast of the year. Once the Black Bears showed their snarl, Brockton could not mount any further offense. In the seventh inning, Pete Paciorek reached on an error by the Rox left fielder, Mike Torres, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on Tito Cruz's single, and scored on Mark Burnett's RBI double down the right field line. After Chris Briones was intentionally walked to load the bases, Jose Mateo smashed a 2-run single to left, giving Black bears a 4-1 edge. Berkshire capped their onslaught in the 8th when third baseman Brady Williams hit a mammoth two-run bomb over the left field fence.
The Black Bears starter, Dan Henderson picked up the win (2-5), allowing one run and five hits with one strikeout over seven innings. Brockton starter Scott Martin fell to 3-3 with the loss. The left-hander gave up six runs, four earned, with six strikeouts over eight innings. The Black Bears finish the first half in third place of the South Division of the Northeast league with a record of 21-25.
