
Bergeron, Murray lead Canada to win at World Championships

The Qualifying Round of the International Ice Hockey Federation's 2004 World Championships is now underway, with all 11 former Providence Bruins players who are in the tournament playing in the round. The World Championships, which began on April 24, conclude on May 9 in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic. The Qualifying Round concludes on Tuesday, May 4. The Final Round begins the next day and concludes with the Championship Game on Sunday, May 9. Each country will play three games in the Qualifying Round to try to advance on to the Final Round.
Canada skated to a 2-0 defeat of Latvia on Friday. The Canadians were helped by Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron, who scored his first goal of the World Championships. Boston Bruins right wing Glen Murray, a member of the 1992-93 Providence Bruins inaugural team, had an assist on Canada's other goal. Defenseman Steve Staios, who played for Providence in 1995-96, is also playing for Canada. Murray's teammates in Providence, forwards Sergei Zholtok and Grigori Panteleev, are playing for Latvia, as is Aigar Cipruss, who spent part of the 1995-96 season with Providence.
In other Qualifying Round action, Sweden and Finland played to a 1-1 tie. Boston Bruins forwards Michael Nylander and P.J. Axelsson are playing for Sweden. Antti Laaksonen, a member of the P-Bruins' 1999 Calder Cup championship team, is playing for Finland.
Two other Qualifying Round games will be played later on Friday. The Czech Repbulic, with Boston Bruins defenseman Jiri Slegr, will face off with Austria. Slovakia, led by original P-Bruin Jozef Stumpel, plays against Russia.
The U.S. plays its first game on Saturday against Russia. Team U.S.A. is coached by former Providence Bruins defenseman and head coach Peter Laviolette, while former P-Bruins Andy Hilbert, Hal Gill and Jeff Jillson are on the playing roster.
