Bergeron comes up big again, Baysox win 4-3 in 10

BOWIE, Md. - Since joining the team in mid-May, Peter Bergeron has done more as the Baysox leadoff hitter than score runs. He has also shown a flair for driving them in at opportune moments.

Bergeron's latest big hit came in the bottom of the tenth on Monday, when he laced a single into right to score Tripper Johnson from third base and give the Baysox a 4-3 win over Norwich.

Johnson led off the inning with a ground-rule double to left, his first extra-base hit since July 1. Navigators pitched James Garcia got Woody Cliffords to ground out to second, but Johnson moved to third on the play. Mike Huggins followed with a strikeout, but Brandon Marsters drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. Bergeron lined an offering from Garcia (5-7) over the head of Tyler Von Schell at first base, and Johnson trotted home with the winning run.

Gators slugger Dan Ortmeier had tied the game with a two-run homer off Scott Rice in the eighth. The Baysox had been leading, 3-3, to that point.

Sendy Rleal (3-2) picked up the win by shutting down Norwich in the final two innings.

The Navigators took a 1-0 lead in the third by scoring an unearned run off starter Cory Morris. Leadoff hitter Tim Hutting singled to right, but Cliffords misplayed the ball and Hutting advanced to second on the error. Morris struck out the next batter, but Kevin Frandsen followed with a single to left that scored Hutting.

Bowie tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Bergeron hit a sacrifice fly to deep center that scored Marsters. Simon Pond gave the Baysox the lead in the next inning with a solo home run over the high fence in right-center. It was his 12th homer of the season.

The Baysox moved ahead by two in the next inning, when Huggins came home from second on an errant throw to first by Hutting. The shortstop had been attempting to turn a double play on a ball hit by Brandon Fahey.

BAYSOX NOTES: The Baysox (46-48) moved back into fourth place in the Southern Division with the win and Harrisburg's 6-2 loss to Trenton...Tonight was Bowie's 11th extra-inning game of the season and eighth at home. The Baysox are 6-5 in extra-inning contests this season...After giving up no earned runs in seven innings, Morris' earned run average fell to 2.40, which would have been good enough for the Eastern League lead at the start of the day...Pond went 3-for-4 in the game...Norwich starting pitcher Merkin Valdez left the game with an apparent injury while pitching to Joey Hammond in the bottom of the fifth. He was replaced by Oscar Montero.

ON DECK: The Baysox and Navigators will meet in a doubleheader on Tuesday to make up a June 30 contest in Norwich that was cancelled due to fog. The teams will play two seven-inning games, beginning at 6:05 p.m. LHP Eric DuBose (6-10, 3.50) will face LHP Brian Mazone (4-6, 3.24) in the opener. RHP Nick McCurdy (2-4, 5.71) gets the ball for the Baysox in game two.
