New Jersey Jackals News Release

North Shore's Jarrett Reininger smashed a high-arching grand slam off Jackals reliever Josh Schwartz to give the Spirit the lead and a 4-1 win at Yogi Berra Stadium. The seventh-inning blast spoiled the return outing of veteran starter, Joel Bennett; it was his first start since returning from the inactive list.

Bennett pitched a perfect 3 2/3 innings until surrendering a bunt single to Vic Davilla that trickled down the third-base line in the fourth. Bennett's pitched six scoreless innings while allowing just four hits and a walk with three strikeouts. He was replaced by Schwartz (2-2), who picked up the loss as he surrendered four runs in one inning of relief.

The Jackals (15-15) would load the bases in the ninth against Spirit reliever Kevin Fitzgerald. The closer struck out Zach Smithlin on a called strike three and he collected his fifth save of the season.

Spirit's starting pitcher Jared Trout pitched 6 innings and allowed one run on four hits for his second victory of the season.

Jason Belcher belted a deep home run in the first inning that gave the Jackals an early 1-0 lead. The homer was Belcher's second of the year and was originally called a double since the ball ricocheted of the second level wall into play (Once the ball hits the second tier it is ruled a homer).

Trout (2-0) surrendered a double and two walks to load the bases in the second, but Guillermo Reyes hit into a double play to end the potential big inning.
